IIt is 1891. Anya is a product of a Russian father and Tlingit-Russian mother. Unsure of where she belongs in society, she longs to see more of the world. She marries a man she hopes will help her achieve her goal. Her marriage does not work out as planned. Anya finds herself in Russia after her husband is advised to keep her out of that country or keep her identity secret. He does not do so. An old enemy of her father kidnaps her intending to hold her for ransom. Anya finds herself imprisoned on a decaying estate in the middle of Siberia. Without identification and stranded in Russia, she is desperate to reach her home in Alaska. Anya must go eastward across Siberia. It is insane to try it but she has no choice. Her family and the man who loves her hope she is still alive. Her best friend and protector during her childhood has been in love with her for years. Helping her family to find the answers to her disappearance does not ease his heartache. But it is all he can do. He refuses to believe she is dead. The husband who took her to Russia against her father's advice does believe she is dead. He leaves Russia, leaving Anya alone there. She takes her fate into her own hands.
