A Midlife Romance

Life never changed. Even after my husband passed away, everything remained the same. Then I found myself at the airport, a ticket to California in hand. A gift from my children.

“See the sights.”

“Explore.”

“Have fun.”

“Come back with lots of pictures.”

I knew they felt sorry for me.

As I waited by the gate, something caught my eye. No. Not something. Someone.

He’s first class, for sure. Silver hair. Bespoke suit. Leather carry on bag. A smile as pure as gold.

Gold. That’s what I called him in my heart.

My world turned upside down when he spoke up from behind me.

“I’m going to sleep with you.”

It sounded like a threat, but I would discover that it was a promise.

As he made his way to the aisle and walked past the curtain, separating coach from first class, I remained frozen.
