Why did I lie?

I hadn’t planned on lying. When that stranger looked at me, eyes wide with panic and desperation, I wasn’t planning anything; only to hold on until the ambulance showed up. I intended to give the journal to whoever asked for it. But when I was standing there in front of Officer Keating and his suspicious-looking partner, I didn’t.
