FRANCE: In the year of grace, 1190.

When the kings of England and France meet to make final preparations for the Third Crusade, an assassin releases an arrow aimed at the hearts of one of those kings, and strikes a lady-in-waiting instead.

All fingers point toward Drake fitzAlan, a young knight serving under Richard the Lionheart. Hunted down by loyal knights from France and England, Drake first makes haste to secure the safety of his loved ones and then returns to Nonancourt Castle, there to uncover the truth … if he can. In a castle where the assassin or assassins are still at-large, more will die that night, even while Drake has run-ins with princes and fools, each having motive enough to want Richard dead.

Time is against him, and his enemies are many. Cornered by the castle guard, he uses the king’s brother John as a shield to escape into the night. No sooner than he gets away, Drake is ambushed, blindfolded, and taken by force to a faraway castle, where his brother Stephen is being held for ransom. The payment for his release is simple: Richard must be assassinated or Stephen will die.

Given no choice but to comply, even if it costs him honor and life, Drake sets out to finish the assassination lesser men tried but failed. This time, capture is unavoidable. Barely escaping the gibbet and thrown into a dungeon to rot, Drake resigns himself to certain death. A turn of events liberates him, but to keep both his head and his honor, he must somehow save his brother, uncover the conspiracy, and bring to justice the mastermind of the assassination plot.
