Lyndon Johnson took office in 1963 as the 36th President of the United States. He was sworn into office on Air Force One after the assassination of President Kennedy. Johnson is known for designing the "Great Society" legislation that included laws on civil rights, Medicare, Medicaid, and aid to education.
