Writer-PI Bill Hays is living in self-exile on the Navajo Reservation in Shiprock, New Mexico with his spiritual counterpart, Leslie Anne, and their German shepherd don Miguel, a totally sentient being. When famed Anasazi archeologist Deborah Hughes goes missing at Mesa Verde, Bill gets drawn into an investigation of other missing people at Anasazi and Native American sites in the Four Corner area. He soon discovers that these people came there for the site's healing properties, and that there has been an upsurge of magnetic energy in the Southwest. Bill finds himself in another pitched battle with the evil sorcerer Ramon de Onate, who has aligned himself with a U.S. military unit to suppress these upsurges that may elevate human consciousness if they become more widespread. Bill, with the aid of Brujo Don Carlos, shifts to his nagual form and infiltrates their headquarters to gather evidence. Onate then resurrects an ancient Toltec device, "The Serpent of Time," that can erase from his and his colleagues' memories this pilfered information and prevent its disclosure. The brujos call upon the female sorcerer, the Death Defier, to help counter this strategy.
