Nine-year-old "Swatty" Schwarz, narrator Georgie, and their timid friend "Bony" are growing up just yards from the Mississippi River in 1870s Riverbank, Iowa. Swatty is a born leader of boys and full of ideas for fun and moneymaking. Together, they fish, swim, row skiffs, run afoul of the town bully, conspire to foil their nasty schoolteacher, act out the plots of their favorite dime novels, and promote a romance between Swatty's older brother and Georgie's older sister. These connected stories were originally published in magazine form between 1915 and 1918 and are based loosely on their author's early life in the river port of Muscatine.
