If you have never read a Vince Flynn, Mitch Rapp series episode, this book will give you a taste of the globe spanning action and suspense that is typical of a Rapp story. The Survivor opens in Istanbul where we learn that the U.S. has a big, big security problem. Mitch Rapp, a U.S. covert counter-intelligence operative, is there to deal with it. In doing so, he is opposed by three armed Russian operatives. He neutralizes them decisively; and we see why his enemies think he is:

“Simply one of the most dangerous men to have ever lived.”

Then Rapp and his team dash between the U.S. Europe, Russia and the Middle East. The Survivor’s chapters, filled with intrigue, build to a series of violent encounters that culminate in a deadly confrontation. Along the way Rapp is severely challenged, and faces one of the most difficult situations in a career filled with impossible situations.

If you have previously read a Rapp series book you will notice that Mitch struggles physically and psychologically a bit more than in other the series’ books. We shouldn’t be too surprised since he is 44 years old now. But, the vital, energetic, impatient, cranky and irreverent Rapp is still a major force in the world. This book will give you new insights to Rapp’s motives and character and perhaps a few hints about where Mitch is going from here.

Most importantly, being the first book after Vince Flynn’s untimely death in 2013, The Survivor ushers in a new chapter and, hopefully, breathes new life into the Rapp franchise.
