Junior Constable Barry Mannette, a Native from the Anawatna Reserve with slight Shamanic healing abilities, is content at his job with the Tattonville Township Police. He is married to Senior Constable Linda Mcenna, a short but muscular motorcycle cop, and they are supervised by their boss, Sergeant Alan Parks. Things get out of hand when construction disturbs an old grave and the spirit of a great shaman is released to seek not only revenge and have her body placed back in the burial spot, but to challenge a living shaman for ultimate power in both the Spirit and Mundane worlds. Barry seeks advice from the Reserve shaman and DenMother, Ellen Bluewater, after Mennonite farmer Samuel Andersen, a good friend of Barry's, finds papers that tell of his great-great-grandfather's work for Tatton, a soldier who created the town in 1846, and the burial of the body of Anawatna. She tells him that the spirit of Anawatna has been released by the desecration of her grave on Tatton Estate. Native lore says she will seek revenge to have her body put back in the grave, a promise made by her married lover John Tatton, and to challenge a living Great Shaman for ultimate power. With the DenMother's help, Barry and his power animal, Badger, are able to open the way for Linda to finally journey to meet Eagle, and begin the battle. With the Canadian government upset that they have not solved the murders, they are told to cooperate with the town police force, and Alan brings them to a secluded farmhouse for protection. But Anawatna appears and seeks her revenge on the three of them With the DenMother's guidance, Linda will learn how to harness her new power, and Barry will become a great healer, Shamans in their own right. Alan, who now appreciates Barry's Native ways, now carries a protective medicine pouch given to him by the DenMother, to ward off the ghost of his grandmother. Later, Barry begins a journey, and in conversation with Badger, and shortly joined by Linda and Eagle, they learn that their new powers and understanding will be needed in more adventures to come.
