This is a book for massage therapists and caregivers of seniors. We need to understand our seniors, their stage of life, their physical issues, the medications and how they affect our work, the obstacles they face, and how we can better address their needs.
I have seen and heard too many misguided interactions with our elders. Lack of understanding and proper response to these clients may cause them to stop massage when they most need it.
I have taken courses with Mary Kathleen Rose and her Comfort Touch, and Erik Dalton and his Myoskeletal Alignment. I have combined my training with my own understanding of my senior body's ailments and oddities to make my own style of bringing better balance to the bodies that seek my care.
When we can bring comfort to our seniors, we are more able to do the same with our younger clients. Older clients have more pain, more disability, more medications and side effects, more nutrition issues, more loss and depression. Seniors teach us patience, flexibility, and gratitude. We must constantly learn in order to do them justice. This all translates and transfers to our less involved clients.
The massage profession needs leaders, needs creators, needs innovators. There will be 70-75 million baby boomers and we will be around for 20-30 years. Will you understand our needs? Read this book and be ahead of those who just take courses in techniques. If you like what you learn, I also teach, speak to groups, and mentor.
As of June, 2014, I will be the official expert guide for massage therapy on www.selfgrowth.com. I hope to see you there and on my own www.seniormassagegroup.com.
