Given their haphazard publication and preservation even while he was alive, the state of R. A. Lafferty's literary corpus is even more heartbreaking now, over a decade later. A convergence of neglect and oversight and plain greed has led to generations of readers coming of age who never have occasion to see or read anything by one of America's best and most original writers.

This book is meant to remedy that.

We here at Books of Sand have gathered together every short story ever published by R. A. Lafferty into one digital volume, and now offer it as a free download to the reading public.

We felt that one of the finest authors in the English language deserved our best work, so we put a great deal of effort into making this one really special. Just to pique your interest, The Man Who Talled Tales has:

Each of the 224 short stories published by R. A. Lafferty (and several bonus unpublished stories as well)

An all-new Introduction

The author's afterwords on select stories

Three active Tables of Contents (alphabetical, by collection, and by composition date) to make navigating as simple as possible

Over 1000+ corrections to the typography and formatting of the source texts

Text and formatting optimized for e-reading, with proper diacriticals and accents

Those new to our site: take heart. These are not shoddy OCR scans indifferently posted to the web (or worse, sold on the web). Each story has been rigorously proofed and formatted by readers who genuinely care about the work. It's no exaggeration to say this edition is the most accurate, pristine text of Lafferty's stories ever made available to the public.

Now, the elephant in the room. We think the Centipede Press editions are beautiful artifacts, and we had long discussions (read some of them here) on whether this e-book might actually harm our primary goal, which is bringing R. A. Lafferty to a wider audience. Ultimately, the discussions foundered on one thing.

Imagine there is a reader, young or old, who has heard from friends they trust or authors they admire about the unique and brilliant stories of R. A. Lafferty. Imagine they want to sample a few.

Realistically, do they have any good options?

All of that said, we genuinely hope you enjoy the book, that you find new gems and old favorites between its digital covers, and that you'll pass this around among friends and fellow travelers.
