It is Scotland in 1934. Mhairi Mackinnon is asking a lot of herself when she takes on the responsibility of raising her four year old nephew, Jamie, after his parents disappear without trace in the hills of north Argyll. In doing so, she has to sacrifice her job as a schoolteacher in Gairloch and change the whole direction of her life. Mhairi succeeds in giving him a secure and happy upbringing through the war years and beyond but the unresolved mystery of the disappearance is a still, dark cloud hanging over them. It is only in 2014, through the actions of two unlikely heroes and their chance discoveries, that hidden truths begin to break the surface.
