915 A.D. Danish East Anglia.

‘The wind roared through the dark wood. Branches knocked against each other and bare twigs trembled, hissing together, tormented by the gusts. Hidden alone amongst the trees, the house showed no light from any window.

Then a candle flared, lighting the window. A shriek speared the cold air, then a yell of pain and gurgling, choking while another screamed on and on…’

Someone or something is brutally murdering the men of the English village of Byrnham, and taking the women and children. The desperate survivors turn to the Danes for help: honourable Ragnar, tormented Bjarni and one eyed Steinar.

Ragnar has a new family to protect from a returning enemy; Bjarni’s family is breaking up, as his wife gets more involved with her mysterious, sadistic lover, and a slave woman is brought into their home; Steinar is trying to keep control of the local hysteria.

Gathering diverse allies, the trio set out on their quest. Someone knows who the culprit is, but there is a traitor among the Danes.
