Few women could have been more opposite in character than Frances in her quiet, reclusive life to that of the infamous mistress in history, Lady Hamilton. So, when her dreams seem to be curiously affected by her, Frances is deeply troubled.
Following the breakup of her marriage and a miscarriage, Frances Taylor’s life has become withdrawn to one consisting of her office job and her evenings and weekends in her small flat. She feels that life is as good as it can get; until her brother, Ted, persuades her to take on a second job.
But when her health takes a turn for the worst and she suffers from exhaustion, Ted, decides to take her for a fortnight’s holiday at an upmarket hotel in Kent, where Frances can relax and get away from her stresses.
Frances loves everything about the hotel, except for a portrait of Lady Hamilton, prominently displayed in her room. This she finds curiously annoying. Being strait-laced by nature, she expresses her disapproval of the portrait to Ted, who, in turn, suggests Frances try to understand why she lived her life the way she did.
However, when the portrait seems to be influencing her mood and her dreams, Frances is greatly alarmed. When the dreams occur more than once over the following days, Frances comes to realize that something about the portrait, or about her room, may be trying to tell her something; causing such realistic dreams that seem to last years, becoming the life she knows, so real that reality itself becomes more like an interlude. Convinced though she is that she is being shown the life of Lady Hamilton as the dreams take her first to London and then on to Italy, is the life led in dream really that led by Lady Hamilton? And why is this life led in the past being shown to her?
Frances finds that a simple holiday becomes one that draws her into a life lived in the past which in turn could also direct her own life onto a new path.
