Everyone is atwitter in Copper Mill, when a flock of rare sparrows is expected to land at Best Acres, a bird sanctuary owned by the reclusive Artie Best. A festival is planned to honor the extraordinary birds, and for Kate, the bird-watching season also brings a happy reunion with her high-school English teacher, avid birder Bonnie Mulgrew, and a mystery that only Kate can solve. A week before the big event, the rare birds are nowhere to be seen. What has happened to the entire flock? With only a cursory knowledge of birds, can Kate help recover them before masses of shocked sparrow-watchers arrive?
