The name John Brown will always be linked with the time just preceding the Civil War. This biography tells the story of a white man who advocated and practiced insurrection in his effort to abolish slavery. His attempt to start a liberation movement among enslaved blacks at Harper's Ferry stunned the nation. Afterward he was tried for treason and hanged. The raid at Harper's Ferry escalated tensions and a year later the Civil War began.
