Harvey King Shackleford (1840-1906) was an American author of dime novels, adventure stories for boys and temperance novels. He was the author of over 300 dime novels under the pseudonyms Hal Standish and Allan Arnold. From 1899 until his death he wrote around 60 titles in the Fred Fearnot series, many of which were published in Work and Win and Pluck and Luck. After his death, the series continued under the name Hal Standish but was under the authorship of several others. The series was also reissued after his death. The first story was Fred Fearnot; or, School Days at Avon (1898), and the last, Fred Fearnot and the Mountain Man; or, The Secret of the Silver Mine (1912).
