The Reluctant Bounty Hunter

When Duncan Lee left the union army at the end of the civil war, he had very little money and there were not many jobs about. He rode past town after town and decided to ride into Martinsburg. He chose the day to ride in just after the bank had been robbed. When he asked about work the deputy laughed and suggested that he catch up with the posse so that he could share in the reward when they caught the perpetrators. He gave him flyers with the gangs description on them and likenesses. He chose to ride out the way he came in but when he came to a wide plain he chose to go up the rocks on the side to see who was about. There were Pawnee and Sioux about and he had fought both of them. They would kill him if they could without thinking twice about it. From his vantage point he saw six Pawnee ride across the plain, four braves and two younger Indians. One a buck and one a squaw. He readied to move on but the two young Indians came back in a hurry on their own. Four men caught them up and although the squaw was only fourteen or fifteen they had only one thing in mind. They tied the young buck to the only tree and staked the squaw out on the ground after ripping he dress off. Duncan was busily watching and matching faces with the flyers. These were the men who were worth quite a lot of money and he chose to kill them before they had their way with the squaw. He fired four times and then started back down onto the prairie. On the opposite plateau, Running Wolf the Pawnee chief watched with a heavy heart, he was too far away to save his children. When he saw them all shot, he traced the shots back to Duncan, soon after they became friends. Running Wolf gave Duncan a gift, his daughter and Duncan found her very attractive. He found a nice valley to build his cabin in and took Morning Sun to it to be his wife. Life went on and Duncan had cause to kill more wanted outlaws, again saving Little Buck's life, Running Wolf's youngest son. The Sioux were a constant problem and when they caught two women from the town cat-house on the prairie, they did just what they wanted to them and then set fire to the surrey they were in. One girl was taken back to the Indian village, still alive and they sent for Duncan. She made him promise to put her daughter through a proper school before she died and Duncan agreed. She had met an Indian, Little Elk, a huge brave and Little Elk had been paying her for her services with gold. He had no idea about the value of gold and was more than a little taken with Hannah. The Sioux had killed him as well. Duncan found the daughter, twelve year old Sarah and took her to his valley to teach her a few things. Shooting, fighting and riding, while Morning Sun, his wife taught her how to cook and how to speak Pawnee. Follow the adventures of Duncan and Sarah as they battled to survive.
