Eric Reinhold is believed by the world to be dead, gunned down by mobsters while investigating a series of mysterious murders. Gillis find that Eric and Kate's father, an American ambassador and government trouble-shooter, has vanished on a trip to the little-known central Asian kingdom of Quanyu. When Kate travels to Washington to seek to find out why their father went to Quanyu, her contact mysteriously dies and she is kidnapped, narrowly escaping after a harrowing struggle.

Death follows the crew as they sail to Asia, crossing into China in the midst of the Japanese invasion. Once in Quanyu, they are caught up in a web of deceit, secrecy, and rebellion. As they attempt to sift through the shifting alliances of church and state, murder is ever at their elbow, murder in the form of a 500-year-old weapon of assassination that makes no sound and leaves no survivors. If they cannot find this weapon before it is seized by the encroaching Japanese empire, the entire course of history may be changed, and the entire Western world could fall to the terror of this invisible killer.
