Professor Addison Van Name (1835-1922) was an American librarian and linguist. He graduated from Yale as valedictorian in 1858. Until 1862 he was studying in German Universities. At that time he was a tutor and taught Hebrew in the theological seminary at Yale. From 1865 until 1904 he was a librarian. He began the acquisition of East Asian books for Yale and helped in building up the Yale collection of Asian literature. He authored Contribution to Creole Grammar (1869-1870) which represented the scientific study of Creole languages and Catalogue of the William Loring Andrews Collection of Early Books in the Library of Yale University (1913).
