Excerpt from Rhymes of the Rockies:

My Rhymes

I know that my rhymes are homely

But it's just this way with me;

Mine's not been a bed of roses

Or a boat on a silvery sea.

But beside some trail on a mountain

As I sit me down to rest,

Or by the light of a flick'ring campfire

When the sun is low in the West.

Or perhaps in some deep tangled wild-wood,

Or again in some sunny glen,

These thoughts took form in my feeble brain,

Then slowly dripped from my pen.

I picture the trails as I find them,

Steep, level or over-grown,

Kissed by the flowers and sunshine

Or filled with trees storm-blown.
