The Arms of the Law

Mary Sally Boland is trying to make a new beginning from a life that offers little happiness. But being caught by the local sheriff, Tracy Westinghouse, for pickpocketing is hardly promising. And her con-artist boyfriend decides that the small town that they stopped in on their way to Oregon was rife with rich retirees, who were just itching to give away their money to a person with a sob story. So they set up a scheme that promises to land them a small fortune.

The boyfriend convinces Mary Sally to go out on a date with the sheriff when the sheriff asks her out. Reluctantly she agrees but she is wary of the strong attraction that unexpectedly flares up between them. It turns out that she was right to be wary of Tracy. Instead of taking her back to her motel after their date, he takes her to his house where they spend a night of hot sex that frightens Mary Sally.

Mary Sally considers that as torrid as her affair with the sheriff is, it's only temporary. She cannot imagine that a man like him would want to spend his life with her, because she feels that she has so little to offer to Tracy. But little does she realize that love, and Tracy, have a different idea of her worthiness for a man.
