The third book in the Danutia Dranchuk mystery series reunites RCMP constable Danutia Dranchuk and drama critic Arthur Fairweather. This time they are visiting England's Peak District, where the practice of ancient Celtic rituals persists as well as reminders of the exploitation of child labourers during the Industrial Revolution. Danutia has been transferred to the area for a police-training course, when Arthur returns for his mother's funeral. Suspecting foul play in her death, the two question the feuding members of the village's well dressing committee.

With her police powers stripped, Danutia must navigate through an unfamiliar culture, as personal and professional boundaries become blurred. When a child from the village is abducted, the race to save him leads Arthur into extreme danger. Only Danutia has a chance of rescuing both Arthur and the child from an "unholy rite."
