Bullock and Mahon's book fosters an individual, not a categorical approach to understanding and working with individuals with disabilities. The first section introduces the reader to people first language and stresses its importance when dealing with individuals with disabilities. The second section provides a thorough overview of the history of treatment, conceptual cornerstones of service delivery, legislation, and discrimination barriers and accessibility of people with disabilities. The third section describes the general characteristics of individuals with mental retardation, mental illness, physical disabilities, visual impairments, learning impairments and hearing loss.
