This book, first published in 1871, is the account of Thomas North, a devout Christian, who travels to Texas from Illinois in 1860, right before the Civil War breaks out. During his trip, he encounters racism, desperadoes, forbidden love, and the vast stretches of unsettled land that make up Texas during that era. Visiting places like Galveston, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Matamoros, and points in between, North eloquently describes both the landscape and the people of the young state of Texas during that crucial time of American history.
Told from the point of view of a religious Yankee, the contrast between his world-view and that of the southerners he encounters make this an interesting read and still relevant to what goes on in America today.
Great book for lovers of Texas, Civil War, or mid-19th century American history.
