Char Seymour’s life was anything but ordinary and so is her death.

She wants none of her children with her — only her former son-in-law.

It is to him that she leaves her vast trunk of papers, diaries, photographs and other memorabilia - fragments of a life spanning decades.

With the help of Char’s daughter Sophia, Guy launches into a journey through a life crammed full of excitement, passion and tragedy.

From Char’s birth in the beginning of the century through her glamorous years as a Bright Young Thing in the London of the 1920s he discovers her affairs and three stormy marriages.

Devotedly piecing together the clues, Guy learns more about Char in her death than anybody else could possibly have known about her whilst living.

And yet still Char remains an enigma.

Desperate to understand her, Guy becomes lost in Char’s history, and as it moves closer to the present, he begins to discover more in the abundance of the past than he wants to know...
