Experience Across the River

On the west bank of the Guadalquivir, old Seville meets new. Since Roman times, pottery has been made in Triana, an area named after the emperor Trajan. It has traditionally been a working-class district, famous as the home of bullfighters and flamenco artists. In the 15th century, a Carthusian monastery was built in what was then a quiet area north of Triana – hence the name that the district acquired: Isla de la Cartuja. Later Columbus resided here, planning his future exploits. Mainly due to this connection, La Cartuja was the site for Expo ’92. The Expo site has been redeveloped to include the Isla Mágica theme park.
