Notes on Transliteration and Personal Names
A glossary of words and terms used in the text is given on page 247 along with a list of Chinese deities referred to in this work. Mandarin terms are given first and then, where used, Hokkien terms are given with an H. in front of them. Standardized transcription has been used where possible or else informants’ transcriptions have been used.
In the text, names have been changed for reasons of confidentiality. English names are used where the person’s usual term of address is English, and Chinese names are used where the usual term of address is Chinese. I do not give the names of the shrines I visited but refer to the two shrines focused on in the book as the Ang Mo Kio shrine and the Red Hill shrine, because those shrines are in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio and Red Hill.
