TOPPINGS, SIDES, AND ADD-INS

ICE CREAM SANDWICH

While our ice cream is mostly known for its simple flavors, and we love nothing more than a simple scoop, every once in a while we want a sundae replete with chocolate fudge sauce, nuts, whipped cream, and maybe a few other things.

While working on this book, we got to explore lots of different possibilities—some flavors went on to become seasonal specials in our stores. We played around with adding some brittle, swirling in some compote, tucking in some shortbread, or folding in marshmallow swirl. We’ve even topped our ice cream with granola in hopes of trying to fool ourselves that we were making ice cream a bit more nutritious (it might be better sprinkled over our morning yogurt). But what we realized is that sometimes our purist approach needs to be shaken up a bit.

Whether it’s ice cream au naturel or with some toppings, add-ins, or sides, we’ve provided you with a few options to mix things up, so to speak. And the best part is that many of the recipes in this chapter, like cookies or brownies, for instance, make plenty to have left over as a snack—a win-win!
