Ski Sweater Ornaments

Designed by Nancy Lindberg

Once you’ve made one of these charming little sweaters, you won’t be able to resist making others. What a great way to use up yarn leftovers and try out different color combinations! There’s little shaping and no armholes to deal with — just knit a large tube for the body and two smaller tubes for the arms, then assemble the parts when the knitting is completed.

Knitting the Body

Setup: Using MC and double-pointed needles, cast on 48 stitches. Distribute stitches evenly among four needles (12 stitches per needle), and join into a round, being careful not to twist the work. Place a stitch marker after the first stitch on Needle 1 to mark the beginning of the round.

Note: When working charts in this section, always begin where indicated on line 1 at the bottom of the appropriate chart, and work from right to left. For more information about working with two colors, see The Joy of Color and Getting Around.

Rounds 1–3: Work in K1, P1 ribbing.

Round 4: Knit to the end of the round.

Rounds 5–13: Using CC and MC, knit each round as you follow the Tree chart, Snowflake chart, or Heart chart on page 130 for the color pattern. Repeat each pattern to the end of the round. Do not cut CC when you reach the end of the pattern.

Rounds 14–16: Using MC, knit to the end of the round.

Rounds 17–28: Using MC and CC, knit each round as you follow the Dot chart on page 130 for the color pattern. Repeat the pattern 12 times around. Complete lines 1–8, then repeat lines 1–4.

Rounds 29–31: Using MC and CC, knit each round as you follow the Zigzag chart on page 130 for the color pattern. Repeat the pattern 12 times around. Cut CC, leaving a tail to weave in later.

Round 32: Using MC, knit to the end of the round.

Rounds 33–35: Work in K1, P1 ribbing.

Bind off all stitches. (There is no armhole.)

Knitting the Sleeves (make 2)

Setup: Using MC, cast on 18 stitches. Distribute the stitches evenly among three needles (6 stitches per needle) and join into a round, being careful not to twist the work. Place a stitch marker after the first stitch on Needle 1 to mark the beginning of the round.

Rounds 1–3: Work in K1, P1 ribbing.

Round 4: *K2, increase 1 in the next stitch by knitting into the front and then into the back of it; repeat from * to the end of the round.

You now have 24 stitches.

Rounds 5 and 6: Knit to the end of the round.

Rounds 7–22: Using MC and CC, knit each round as you follow the Dot chart on page 130 for the color pattern. Repeat the pattern six times around. Work lines 1–8 twice (two vertical repeats).

Rounds 23–25: Using MC and CC, knit each round as you follow the Zigzag chart on page 130 for the color pattern. Repeat each pattern six times around. Cut MC.

Using CC, bind off all stitches.

Finishing

Turn the body and sleeves inside out and weave all loose ends into the wrong side of the work with a yarn needle.

Fold the sweater body with right sides together and the ending tail at one corner. Sew the shoulder seams by stitching just inside the bound-off stitches, working from the outside toward the center for 1" on each side. Turn the body and sleeves right side out.

Lay each sleeve on one side of the body with the yarn tail at the bottom and the bound-off edge just overlapping the side of sweater from the shoulder down. The bottom edge of each sleeve will be about 134" down from the shoulder. Pin; using the pattern yarn and a yarn needle, sew the sleeves in place, taking invisible stitches close to the bound-off edge, and allowing the bound-off stitches to form a decorative line around the false armhole.

Attach a cord to hang the sweater, or hang it from a doll clothes hanger.

Note: If you are knitting the Snowflake or Heart pattern, use the same MC and CC colors that you’ve been using for the rest of the sweater, not those shown in the Dot and Zigzag charts.
