The reason we call this dish the Asian Cowboy BBQ Tofu is because we’re using tofu for Southern-style cooking. It’s a fusion of great, smoky BBQ flavor with an Eastern protein. This unique home-style BBQ dish is Tamal’s own creation. It has the tangy, spicy, salty, sweet, finger-licking goodness Southern BBQ should have — just without the refined sugars, dyes, and preservatives! We love making Southern-inspired bowls, filled with our Asian Cowboy BBQ Tofu, mashed potatoes, and green beans.
For the BBQ sauce
½ cup organic ketchup
1 tsp. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. vegan Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp. maple syrup
½ tsp. yellow mustard
½ tsp. blackstrap molasses
½ tsp. paprika
½ tsp. garlic powder
½ tsp. onion powder
1 Tbsp. peanut butter (optional)
For the tofu
2 tsp. coconut oil
1 15.5-oz. package firm tofu, cubed
1 In a medium-size bowl, combine all the ingredients for the BBQ sauce except the peanut butter and mix well.
2 Add peanut butter, if using, and stir well with a whisk, so it becomes part of the mixture. The peanut butter is not essential to the BBQ sauce, but it gives the tofu a really nice, creamy flavor. This should make about ¾ cup of BBQ sauce.
3 Heat a cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium heat, add the coconut oil and cubed tofu, and sauté until the cubes are golden brown. Then flip them to cook on the other side.
4 Turn the burner off, add the BBQ sauce to the cooked tofu, and toss until the cubes are very well coated. Serve with Cauliflower Mash and greens.
