Practice your groundstrokes on a rooftop
Three well-maintained tennis courts rest atop the parking structure next to the West Hollywood Public Library across the street from the big blue Pacific Design Center.
Upsides are abundant: no fee; free two-hour parking with validation; relatively well maintained restrooms; three round cast-concrete tables with benches under a roof awning to provide respite from the sun for your snack or post-game picnic; lighted courts for evening play.

Those great rooftop views are equally fantastic from the floor-to-ceiling windows on the second floor of the north side of the library. Black leather couches add a nice touch.
Yet these perks pale next to the rooftop’s expansive bird’s-eye views. Look north for the amazing Santa Monica Mountains with beautiful hillside estates glittering like gems above the flatlands. Turn to the south for an equally delightful but different cityscape. By golly, it’s pretty. And it’s a great place to get a workout too, whether you don your finest tennis whites or not-quite-ready-for-Wimbledon gray sweats.
The courts are open daily on a first-come-first-serve basis. And it tends to get pretty busy on the weekends and in the evenings. Arrive early for the best chance of getting to play without a wait. Alternatively, go on a weekday morning or afternoon, when demand is lower.
Access to the courts is via a borrowed key card, which is acquired in the office on the first floor of the parking garage below the tennis courts in exchange for picture ID (a library card won’t do). When you return the card and pick up your ID, the parking office will provide validation. Note that there are two parking structures separated by a long driveway. Only one offers validation for the courts: as you enter from North San Vincente Boulevard, the structure on the left is for the tennis courts and neighboring West Hollywood Park. The one on the right is for the library.
The city has plans to add a water play area to the park in the near future. You might never leave.
