Greeting

ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜΑΙΟΥΣ 1 Παῦλος δοῦλος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ, κλητὸς ἀπόστολος ἀφωρισμένος εἰς εὐαγγέλιον θεοῦ,

ROMANS 1 Paul,  a a servant [1] of Christ Jesus,  b called to be an apostle,  c set apart for the gospel of God,

2ὃ προεπηγγείλατο διὰ τῶν προφητῶν αὐτοῦ ἐν γραφαῖς ἁγίαις

2which  d he promised beforehand  e through his prophets in the holy Scriptures,

3περὶ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ τοῦ γενομένου ἐκ σπέρματος Δαυὶδ κατὰ σάρκα,

3concerning his Son,  f who was descended from David [2]  g according to the flesh

4τοῦ ὁρισθέντος υἱοῦ θεοῦ ἐν δυνάμει κατὰ πνεῦμα ἁγιωσύνης ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν,

4and  h was declared to be the Son of God  i in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

5δι’ οὗ ἐλάβομεν χάριν καὶ ἀποστολὴν εἰς ὑπακοὴν πίστεως ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ὑπὲρ τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ,

5through whom  j we have received grace and  k apostleship  l to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name  m among all the nations,

6ἐν οἷς ἐστε καὶ ὑμεῖς κλητοὶ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ,

6including you who are  n called to belong to Jesus Christ,

7πᾶσιν τοῖς οὖσιν ἐν Ῥώμῃ ἀγαπητοῖς θεοῦ, κλητοῖς ἁγίοις, χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη ἀπὸ θεοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

7To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:

 o Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Longing to Go to Rome

8Πρῶτον μὲν εὐχαριστῶ τῷ θεῷ μου διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ περὶ πάντων ὑμῶν ὅτι ἡ πίστις ὑμῶν καταγγέλλεται ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ κόσμῳ.

8First,  p I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you,  q because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.

9μάρτυς γάρ μού ἐστιν ὁ θεός, ᾧ λατρεύω ἐν τῷ πνεύματί μου ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ, ὡς ἀδιαλείπτως μνείαν ὑμῶν ποιοῦμαι

9 r For God is my witness,  s whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son,  t that without ceasing I mention you

10πάντοτε ἐπὶ τῶν προσευχῶν μου δεόμενος εἴ πως ἤδη ποτὲ εὐοδωθήσομαι ἐν τῷ θελήματι τοῦ θεοῦ ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ὑμᾶς.

10always in my prayers, asking that somehow  u by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you.

11ἐπιποθῶ γὰρ ἰδεῖν ὑμᾶς, ἵνα τι μεταδῶ χάρισμα ὑμῖν πνευματικὸν εἰς τὸ στηριχθῆναι ὑμᾶς,

11For  v I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you—

12τοῦτο δέ ἐστιν συμπαρακληθῆναι ἐν ὑμῖν διὰ τῆς ἐν ἀλλήλοις πίστεως ὑμῶν τε καὶ ἐμοῦ.

12that is, that we may be mutually encouraged  w by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.

13οὐ θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς ἀγνοεῖν, ἀδελφοί, ὅτι πολλάκις προεθέμην ἐλθεῖν πρὸς ὑμᾶς, καὶ ἐκωλύθην ἄχρι τοῦ δεῦρο, ἵνα τινὰ καρπὸν σχῶ καὶ ἐν ὑμῖν καθὼς καὶ ἐν τοῖς λοιποῖς ἔθνεσιν.

13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, [3] that  x I have often intended to come to you (but  y thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some  z harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles.

14Ἕλλησίν τε καὶ βαρβάροις, σοφοῖς τε καὶ ἀνοήτοις ὀφειλέτης εἰμί,

14 a I am under obligation both to Greeks and to  b barbarians, [4] both to the wise and to the foolish.

15οὕτως τὸ κατ’ ἐμὲ πρόθυμον καὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς ἐν Ῥώμῃ εὐαγγελίσασθαι.

15So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

16Οὐ γὰρ ἐπαισχύνομαι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον, δύναμις γὰρ θεοῦ ἐστιν εἰς σωτηρίαν παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι, Ἰουδαίῳ τε πρῶτον καὶ Ἕλληνι.

16For  d I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is  e the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew  f first and also to  g the Greek.

17δικαιοσύνη γὰρ θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ ἀποκαλύπτεται ἐκ πίστεως εἰς πίστιν, καθὼς γέγραπται· ὁ δὲ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται.

17For in it  h the righteousness of God is revealed  i from faith for faith, [5]  j as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” [6]

God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness

18Ἀποκαλύπτεται γὰρ ὀργὴ θεοῦ ἀπ’ οὐρανοῦ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν ἀσέβειαν καὶ ἀδικίαν ἀνθρώπων τῶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἐν ἀδικίᾳ κατεχόντων,

18For  k the wrath of God  l is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

19διότι τὸ γνωστὸν τοῦ θεοῦ φανερόν ἐστιν ἐν αὐτοῖς· ὁ θεὸς γὰρ αὐτοῖς ἐφανέρωσεν.

19For what can be  m known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.

20τὰ γὰρ ἀόρατα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ κτίσεως κόσμου τοῖς ποιήμασιν νοούμενα καθορᾶται, ἥ τε ἀΐδιος αὐτοῦ δύναμις καὶ θειότης, εἰς τὸ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἀναπολογήτους,

20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature,  n have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, [7] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

21διότι γνόντες τὸν θεὸν οὐχ ὡς θεὸν ἐδόξασαν ἢ ηὐχαρίστησαν, ἀλλ’ ἐματαιώθησαν ἐν τοῖς διαλογισμοῖς αὐτῶν καὶ ἐσκοτίσθη ἡ ἀσύνετος αὐτῶν καρδία.

21For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they  o became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

22φάσκοντες εἶναι σοφοὶ ἐμωράνθησαν

22 p Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

23καὶ ἤλλαξαν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ ἀφθάρτου θεοῦ ἐν ὁμοιώματι εἰκόνος φθαρτοῦ ἀνθρώπου καὶ πετεινῶν καὶ τετραπόδων καὶ ἑρπετῶν.

23and  q exchanged the glory of  r the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24Διὸ παρέδωκεν αὐτοὺς ὁ θεὸς ἐν ταῖς ἐπιθυμίαις τῶν καρδιῶν αὐτῶν εἰς ἀκαθαρσίαν τοῦ ἀτιμάζεσθαι τὰ σώματα αὐτῶν ἐν αὐτοῖς·

24Therefore  s God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to  t the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,

25οἵτινες μετήλλαξαν τὴν ἀλήθειαν τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν τῷ ψεύδει καὶ ἐσεβάσθησαν καὶ ἐλάτρευσαν τῇ κτίσει παρὰ τὸν κτίσαντα, ὅς ἐστιν εὐλογητὸς εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας, ἀμήν.

25because they exchanged the truth about God for  u a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator,  v who is blessed forever! Amen.

26Διὰ τοῦτο παρέδωκεν αὐτοὺς ὁ θεὸς εἰς πάθη ἀτιμίας, αἵ τε γὰρ θήλειαι αὐτῶν μετήλλαξαν τὴν φυσικὴν χρῆσιν εἰς τὴν παρὰ φύσιν,

26For this reason  w God gave them up to  x dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;

27ὁμοίως τε καὶ οἱ ἄρσενες ἀφέντες τὴν φυσικὴν χρῆσιν τῆς θηλείας ἐξεκαύθησαν ἐν τῇ ὀρέξει αὐτῶν εἰς ἀλλήλους, ἄρσενες ἐν ἄρσεσιν τὴν ἀσχημοσύνην κατεργαζόμενοι καὶ τὴν ἀντιμισθίαν ἣν ἔδει τῆς πλάνης αὐτῶν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἀπολαμβάνοντες.

27and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another,  y men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28Καὶ καθὼς οὐκ ἐδοκίμασαν τὸν θεὸν ἔχειν ἐν ἐπιγνώσει, παρέδωκεν αὐτοὺς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ἀδόκιμον νοῦν, ποιεῖν τὰ μὴ καθήκοντα,

28And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God,  z God gave them up to  a a debased mind to do  b what ought not to be done.

29πεπληρωμένους πάσῃ ἀδικίᾳ πονηρίᾳ πλεονεξίᾳ κακίᾳ, μεστοὺς φθόνου φόνου ἔριδος δόλου κακοηθείας, ψιθυριστὰς

29They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,

30καταλάλους θεοστυγεῖς ὑβριστὰς ὑπερηφάνους ἀλαζόνας, ἐφευρετὰς κακῶν, γονεῦσιν ἀπειθεῖς,

30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,

31ἀσυνέτους ἀσυνθέτους ἀστόργους ἀνελεήμονας·

31foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

32οἵτινες τὸ δικαίωμα τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπιγνόντες ὅτι οἱ τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντες ἄξιοι θανάτου εἰσίν, οὐ μόνον αὐτὰ ποιοῦσιν ἀλλὰ καὶ συνευδοκοῦσιν τοῖς πράσσουσιν.

32Though they know  c God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things  d deserve to die, they not only do them but  e give approval to those who practice them.

God’s Righteous Judgment

ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜΑΙΟΥΣ 2 Διὸ ἀναπολόγητος εἶ, ὦ ἄνθρωπε πᾶς ὁ κρίνων· ἐν ᾧ γὰρ κρίνεις τὸν ἕτερον, σεαυτὸν κατακρίνεις, τὰ γὰρ αὐτὰ πράσσεις ὁ κρίνων.

ROMANS 2 Therefore you have  f no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For  g in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.

2οἴδαμεν δὲ ὅτι τὸ κρίμα τοῦ θεοῦ ἐστιν κατὰ ἀλήθειαν ἐπὶ τοὺς τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντας.

2We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.

3λογίζῃ δὲ τοῦτο, ὦ ἄνθρωπε ὁ κρίνων τοὺς τὰ τοιαῦτα πράσσοντας καὶ ποιῶν αὐτά, ὅτι σὺ ἐκφεύξῃ τὸ κρίμα τοῦ θεοῦ;

3Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God?

4ἢ τοῦ πλούτου τῆς χρηστότητος αὐτοῦ καὶ τῆς ἀνοχῆς καὶ τῆς μακροθυμίας καταφρονεῖς, ἀγνοῶν ὅτι τὸ χρηστὸν τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς μετάνοιάν σε ἄγει;

4Or do you presume on  h the riches of his kindness and  i forbearance and  j patience,  k not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

5κατὰ δὲ τὴν σκληρότητά σου καὶ ἀμετανόητον καρδίαν θησαυρίζεις σεαυτῷ ὀργὴν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὀργῆς καὶ ἀποκαλύψεως δικαιοκρισίας τοῦ θεοῦ

5But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are  l storing up  m wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

6ὃς ἀποδώσει ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ·

6 n He will render to each one according to his works:

7τοῖς μὲν καθ’ ὑπομονὴν ἔργου ἀγαθοῦ δόξαν καὶ τιμὴν καὶ ἀφθαρσίαν ζητοῦσιν ζωὴν αἰώνιον,

7to those who  o by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;

8τοῖς δὲ ἐξ ἐριθείας καὶ ἀπειθοῦσιν τῇ ἀληθείᾳ πειθομένοις δὲ τῇ ἀδικίᾳ ὀργὴ καὶ θυμός.

8but for those who are self-seeking [1] and  p do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

9θλῖψις καὶ στενοχωρία ἐπὶ πᾶσαν ψυχὴν ἀνθρώπου τοῦ κατεργαζομένου τὸ κακόν, Ἰουδαίου τε πρῶτον καὶ Ἕλληνος·

9There will be tribulation and distress  q for every human being who does evil, the Jew  r first and also the Greek,

10δόξα δὲ καὶ τιμὴ καὶ εἰρήνη παντὶ τῷ ἐργαζομένῳ τὸ ἀγαθόν, Ἰουδαίῳ τε πρῶτον καὶ Ἕλληνι·

10but glory and honor and  s peace for everyone who does good,  t the Jew first and also the Greek.

11οὐ γάρ ἐστιν προσωπολημψία παρὰ τῷ θεῷ.

11For  u God shows no partiality.

God’s Judgment and the Law

12Ὅσοι γὰρ ἀνόμως ἥμαρτον, ἀνόμως καὶ ἀπολοῦνται, καὶ ὅσοι ἐν νόμῳ ἥμαρτον, διὰ νόμου κριθήσονται·

12For all who have sinned  v without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.

13οὐ γὰρ οἱ ἀκροαταὶ νόμου δίκαιοι παρὰ [τῷ] θεῷ, ἀλλ’ οἱ ποιηταὶ νόμου δικαιωθήσονται.

13For  w it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.

14ὅταν γὰρ ἔθνη τὰ μὴ νόμον ἔχοντα φύσει τὰ τοῦ νόμου ποιῶσιν, οὗτοι νόμον μὴ ἔχοντες ἑαυτοῖς εἰσιν νόμος·

14For when Gentiles, who do not have the law,  x by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.

15οἵτινες ἐνδείκνυνται τὸ ἔργον τοῦ νόμου γραπτὸν ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν, συμμαρτυρούσης αὐτῶν τῆς συνειδήσεως καὶ μεταξὺ ἀλλήλων τῶν λογισμῶν κατηγορούντων ἢ καὶ ἀπολογουμένων,

15They show that the work of the law is  y written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them

16ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὅτε κρίνει ὁ θεὸς τὰ κρυπτὰ τῶν ἀνθρώπων κατὰ τὸ εὐαγγέλιόν μου διὰ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ.

16 z on that day when,  a according to my gospel, God judges  b the secrets of men  c by Christ Jesus.

17Εἰ δὲ σὺ Ἰουδαῖος ἐπονομάζῃ καὶ ἐπαναπαύῃ νόμῳ καὶ καυχᾶσαι ἐν θεῷ

17But if you call yourself a Jew and  d rely on the law and boast in God

18καὶ γινώσκεις τὸ θέλημα καὶ δοκιμάζεις τὰ διαφέροντα κατηχούμενος ἐκ τοῦ νόμου,

18and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law;

19πέποιθάς τε σεαυτὸν ὁδηγὸν εἶναι τυφλῶν, φῶς τῶν ἐν σκότει,

19and if you are sure that you yourself are  e a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,

20παιδευτὴν ἀφρόνων, διδάσκαλον νηπίων, ἔχοντα τὴν μόρφωσιν τῆς γνώσεως καὶ τῆς ἀληθείας ἐν τῷ νόμῳ·

20an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law  f the embodiment of  g knowledge and truth—

21ὁ οὖν διδάσκων ἕτερον σεαυτὸν οὐ διδάσκεις; ὁ κηρύσσων μὴ κλέπτειν κλέπτεις;

21 h you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal?

22ὁ λέγων μὴ μοιχεύειν μοιχεύεις; ὁ βδελυσσόμενος τὰ εἴδωλα ἱεροσυλεῖς;

22You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you  i rob temples?

23ὃς ἐν νόμῳ καυχᾶσαι, διὰ τῆς παραβάσεως τοῦ νόμου τὸν θεὸν ἀτιμάζεις·

23You who  j boast in the law  k dishonor God by breaking the law.

24τὸ γὰρ ὄνομα τοῦ θεοῦ δι’ ὑμᾶς βλασφημεῖται ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, καθὼς γέγραπται.

24For,  l as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed  m among the Gentiles because of you.”

25Περιτομὴ μὲν γὰρ ὠφελεῖ ἐὰν νόμον πράσσῃς· ἐὰν δὲ παραβάτης νόμου ᾖς, ἡ περιτομή σου ἀκροβυστία γέγονεν.

25For circumcision indeed is of value  n if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.

26ἐὰν οὖν ἡ ἀκροβυστία τὰ δικαιώματα τοῦ νόμου φυλάσσῃ, οὐχ ἡ ἀκροβυστία αὐτοῦ εἰς περιτομὴν λογισθήσεται;

26So, if  o a man who is uncircumcised keeps  p the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded [2] as circumcision?

27καὶ κρινεῖ ἡ ἐκ φύσεως ἀκροβυστία τὸν νόμον τελοῦσα σὲ τὸν διὰ γράμματος καὶ περιτομῆς παραβάτην νόμου.

27Then he who is physically [3] uncircumcised but keeps the law  q will condemn you who have  r the written code [4] and circumcision but break the law.

28οὐ γὰρ ὁ ἐν τῷ φανερῷ Ἰουδαῖός ἐστιν οὐδὲ ἡ ἐν τῷ φανερῷ ἐν σαρκὶ περιτομή,

28For  s no one is a Jew  t who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical.

29ἀλλ’ ὁ ἐν τῷ κρυπτῷ Ἰουδαῖος, καὶ περιτομὴ καρδίας ἐν πνεύματι οὐ γράμματι, οὗ ὁ ἔπαινος οὐκ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων ἀλλ’ ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ.

29But a Jew is one  u inwardly, and  v circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter.  w His praise is not from man but from God.

God’s Righteousness Upheld

ΠΡΟΣ ΡΩΜΑΙΟΥΣ 3 Τί οὖν τὸ περισσὸν τοῦ Ἰουδαίου ἢ τίς ἡ ὠφέλεια τῆς περιτομῆς;

ROMANS 3 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision?

2πολὺ κατὰ πάντα τρόπον. πρῶτον μὲν [γὰρ] ὅτι ἐπιστεύθησαν τὰ λόγια τοῦ θεοῦ.

2Much in every way. To begin with,  x the Jews were entrusted with  y the oracles of God.

3τί γάρ; εἰ ἠπίστησάν τινες, μὴ ἡ ἀπιστία αὐτῶν τὴν πίστιν τοῦ θεοῦ καταργήσει;

3 z What if some were unfaithful?  a Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?

4μὴ γένοιτο· γινέσθω δὲ ὁ θεὸς ἀληθής, πᾶς δὲ ἄνθρωπος ψεύστης, καθὼς γέγραπται·

ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου

καὶ νικήσεις ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαί σε.

4By no means!  b Let God be true though  c every one were a liar, as it is written,

 d “That you may be justified in your words,

and prevail when you  e are judged.”

5εἰ δὲ ἡ ἀδικία ἡμῶν θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην συνίστησιν, τί ἐροῦμεν; μὴ ἄδικος ὁ θεὸς ὁ ἐπιφέρων τὴν ὀργήν; κατὰ ἄνθρωπον λέγω.

5But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict  f wrath on us? ( g I speak in a human way.)

6μὴ γένοιτο· ἐπεὶ πῶς κρινεῖ ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον;

6By no means! For then how could  h God judge the world?

7εἰ δὲ ἡ ἀλήθεια τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ ψεύσματι ἐπερίσσευσεν εἰς τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ, τί ἔτι κἀγὼ ὡς ἁμαρτωλὸς κρίνομαι;

7But if through my lie God’s truth abounds to his glory,  i why am I still being condemned as a sinner?

8καὶ μὴ καθὼς βλασφημούμεθα καὶ καθώς φασίν τινες ἡμᾶς λέγειν ὅτι ποιήσωμεν τὰ κακά, ἵνα ἔλθῃ τὰ ἀγαθά; ὧν τὸ κρίμα ἔνδικόν ἐστιν.

8And why not  j do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.

No One Is Righteous

9Τί οὖν; προεχόμεθα; οὐ πάντως· προῃτιασάμεθα γὰρ Ἰουδαίους τε καὶ Ἕλληνας πάντας ὑφ’ ἁμαρτίαν εἶναι,

9What then? Are we Jews [1] any better off? [2] No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both  k Jews and  l Greeks, are  m under sin,

10καθὼς γέγραπται ὅτι

οὐκ ἔστιν δίκαιος οὐδὲ εἷς,

10as it is written:

 n “None is righteous, no, not one;

11οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ συνίων,

οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκζητῶν τὸν θεόν.

11 no one understands;

no one seeks for God.

12πάντες ἐξέκλιναν ἅμα ἠχρεώθησαν·

οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ ποιῶν χρηστότητα,

[οὐκ ἔστιν] ἕως ἑνός.

12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;

no one does good,

not even one.”

13τάφος ἀνεῳγμένος ὁ λάρυγξ αὐτῶν,

ταῖς γλώσσαις αὐτῶν ἐδολιοῦσαν,

ἰὸς ἀσπίδων ὑπὸ τὰ χείλη αὐτῶν·

13  o “Their throat is  p an open grave;

they use their tongues to deceive.”

 q “The venom of asps is under their lips.”

14ὧν τὸ στόμα ἀρᾶς καὶ πικρίας γέμει,

14  r “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”

15ὀξεῖς οἱ πόδες αὐτῶν ἐκχέαι αἷμα,

15  s “Their feet are swift to shed blood;

16σύντριμμα καὶ ταλαιπωρία ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν,

16 in their paths are ruin and misery,

17καὶ ὁδὸν εἰρήνης οὐκ ἔγνωσαν.

17 and  t the way of peace they have not known.”

18οὐκ ἔστιν φόβος θεοῦ ἀπέναντι τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν.

18  u “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19οἴδαμεν δὲ ὅτι ὅσα ὁ νόμος λέγει τοῖς ἐν τῷ νόμῳ λαλεῖ, ἵνα πᾶν στόμα φραγῇ καὶ ὑπόδικος γένηται πᾶς ὁ κόσμος τῷ θεῷ·

19Now we know that whatever  v the law says it speaks to those who are under the law,  w so that every mouth may be stopped, and  x the whole world may be held accountable to God.

20διότι ἐξ ἔργων νόμου οὐ δικαιωθήσεται πᾶσα σὰρξ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ, διὰ γὰρ νόμου ἐπίγνωσις ἁμαρτίας.

20For  y by works of the law no human being [3] will be justified in his sight, since  z through the law comes knowledge of sin.

The Righteousness of God Through Faith

21Νυνὶ δὲ χωρὶς νόμου δικαιοσύνη θεοῦ πεφανέρωται μαρτυρουμένη ὑπὸ τοῦ νόμου καὶ τῶν προφητῶν,

21But now  a the righteousness of God  b has been manifested apart from the law, although  c the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—

22δικαιοσύνη δὲ θεοῦ διὰ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς πάντας τοὺς πιστεύοντας. οὐ γάρ ἐστιν διαστολή,

22the righteousness of God  d through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.  e For there is no distinction:

23πάντες γὰρ ἥμαρτον καὶ ὑστεροῦνται τῆς δόξης τοῦ θεοῦ

23for  f all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

24δικαιούμενοι δωρεὰν τῇ αὐτοῦ χάριτι διὰ τῆς ἀπολυτρώσεως τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ·

24 g and are justified  h by his grace as a gift,  i through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

25ὃν προέθετο ὁ θεὸς ἱλαστήριον διὰ [τῆς] πίστεως ἐν τῷ αὐτοῦ αἵματι εἰς ἔνδειξιν τῆς δικαιοσύνης αὐτοῦ διὰ τὴν πάρεσιν τῶν προγεγονότων ἁμαρτημάτων

25whom God  j put forward as  k a propitiation  l by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in  m his divine forbearance he had passed over  n former sins.

26ἐν τῇ ἀνοχῇ τοῦ θεοῦ, πρὸς τὴν ἔνδειξιν τῆς δικαιοσύνης αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ νῦν καιρῷ, εἰς τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν δίκαιον καὶ δικαιοῦντα τὸν ἐκ πίστεως Ἰησοῦ.

26It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

27Ποῦ οὖν ἡ καύχησις; ἐξεκλείσθη. διὰ ποίου νόμου; τῶν ἔργων; οὐχί, ἀλλὰ διὰ νόμου πίστεως.

27 o Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith.

28λογιζόμεθα γὰρ δικαιοῦσθαι πίστει ἄνθρωπον χωρὶς ἔργων νόμου.

28For we hold that one is justified by faith  p apart from works of the law.

29ἢ Ἰουδαίων ὁ θεὸς μόνον; οὐχὶ καὶ ἐθνῶν; ναὶ καὶ ἐθνῶν,

29Or  q is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,

30εἴπερ εἷς ὁ θεὸς ὃς δικαιώσει περιτομὴν ἐκ πίστεως καὶ ἀκροβυστίαν διὰ τῆς πίστεως.

30since  r God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and  s the uncircumcised through faith.

31νόμον οὖν καταργοῦμεν διὰ τῆς πίστεως; μὴ γένοιτο· ἀλλὰ νόμον ἱστάνομεν.

31Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
