Some Will Depart from the Faith

ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜΟΘΕΟΝ Αʹ 4 Τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα ῥητῶς λέγει ὅτι ἐν ὑστέροις καιροῖς ἀποστήσονταί τινες τῆς πίστεως προσέχοντες πνεύμασιν πλάνοις καὶ διδασκαλίαις δαιμονίων,

1 TIMOTHY 4 Now  x the Spirit expressly says that  y in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to  z deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,

2ἐν ὑποκρίσει ψευδολόγων, κεκαυστηριασμένων τὴν ἰδίαν συνείδησιν,

2through the insincerity of  a liars whose consciences are seared,

3κωλυόντων γαμεῖν, ἀπέχεσθαι βρωμάτων, ἃ ὁ θεὸς ἔκτισεν εἰς μετάλημψιν μετὰ εὐχαριστίας τοῖς πιστοῖς καὶ ἐπεγνωκόσιν τὴν ἀλήθειαν.

3 b who forbid marriage and  c require abstinence from foods  d that God created  e to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

4ὅτι πᾶν κτίσμα θεοῦ καλὸν καὶ οὐδὲν ἀπόβλητον μετὰ εὐχαριστίας λαμβανόμενον·

4For  f everything created by God is good, and  g nothing is to be rejected if it is  e received with thanksgiving,

5ἁγιάζεται γὰρ διὰ λόγου θεοῦ καὶ ἐντεύξεως.

5for it is made holy  h by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Christ Jesus

6Ταῦτα ὑποτιθέμενος τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς καλὸς ἔσῃ διάκονος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ, ἐντρεφόμενος τοῖς λόγοις τῆς πίστεως καὶ τῆς καλῆς διδασκαλίας ᾗ παρηκολούθηκας·

6 i If you put these things before the brothers, [1] you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have  j followed.

7τοὺς δὲ βεβήλους καὶ γραώδεις μύθους παραιτοῦ. Γύμναζε δὲ σεαυτὸν πρὸς εὐσέβειαν·

7Have nothing to do with irreverent,  k silly myths. Rather  l train yourself for godliness;

8ἡ γὰρ σωματικὴ γυμνασία πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐστὶν ὠφέλιμος, ἡ δὲ εὐσέβεια πρὸς πάντα ὠφέλιμός ἐστιν ἐπαγγελίαν ἔχουσα ζωῆς τῆς νῦν καὶ τῆς μελλούσης.

8for while  m bodily training is of some value, godliness  n is of value in every way, as  o it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

9πιστὸς ὁ λόγος καὶ πάσης ἀποδοχῆς ἄξιος·

9The saying is  p trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance.

10εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ κοπιῶμεν καὶ ἀγωνιζόμεθα, ὅτι ἠλπίκαμεν ἐπὶ θεῷ ζῶντι, ὅς ἐστιν σωτὴρ πάντων ἀνθρώπων μάλιστα πιστῶν.

10For to this end we toil and strive, [2] because we have our hope set on the living God,  q who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

11Παράγγελλε ταῦτα καὶ δίδασκε.

11Command and teach  r these things.

12Μηδείς σου τῆς νεότητος καταφρονείτω, ἀλλὰ τύπος γίνου τῶν πιστῶν ἐν λόγῳ, ἐν ἀναστροφῇ, ἐν ἀγάπῃ, ἐν πίστει, ἐν ἁγνείᾳ.

12 s Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers  t an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.

13ἕως ἔρχομαι πρόσεχε τῇ ἀναγνώσει, τῇ παρακλήσει, τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ.

13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.

14μὴ ἀμέλει τοῦ ἐν σοὶ χαρίσματος, ὃ ἐδόθη σοι διὰ προφητείας μετὰ ἐπιθέσεως τῶν χειρῶν τοῦ πρεσβυτερίου.

14 u Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you  v by prophecy when the council of elders  w laid their hands on you.

15ταῦτα μελέτα, ἐν τούτοις ἴσθι, ἵνα σου ἡ προκοπὴ φανερὰ ᾖ πᾶσιν.

15Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, [3] so that  x all may see your progress.

16ἔπεχε σεαυτῷ καὶ τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ, ἐπίμενε αὐτοῖς· τοῦτο γὰρ ποιῶν καὶ σεαυτὸν σώσεις καὶ τοὺς ἀκούοντάς σου.

16 y Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save  z both yourself and  a your hearers.

Instructions for the Church

ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜΟΘΕΟΝ Αʹ 5 Πρεσβυτέρῳ μὴ ἐπιπλήξῃς ἀλλὰ παρακάλει ὡς πατέρα, νεωτέρους ὡς ἀδελφούς,

1 TIMOTHY 5  b Do not rebuke an older man but encourage him as you would a father,  c younger men as brothers,

2πρεσβυτέρας ὡς μητέρας, νεωτέρας ὡς ἀδελφὰς ἐν πάσῃ ἁγνείᾳ.

2older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, in all purity.

3Χήρας τίμα τὰς ὄντως χήρας.

3Honor widows  d who are truly widows.

4εἰ δέ τις χήρα τέκνα ἢ ἔκγονα ἔχει, μανθανέτωσαν πρῶτον τὸν ἴδιον οἶκον εὐσεβεῖν καὶ ἀμοιβὰς ἀποδιδόναι τοῖς προγόνοις· τοῦτο γάρ ἐστιν ἀπόδεκτον ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ.

4But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn  e to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for  f this is pleasing in the sight of God.

5ἡ δὲ ὄντως χήρα καὶ μεμονωμένη ἤλπικεν ἐπὶ θεὸν καὶ προσμένει ταῖς δεήσεσιν καὶ ταῖς προσευχαῖς νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας,

5She  g who is truly a widow, left all alone, has set her hope on God and  h continues in supplications and prayers night and day,

6ἡ δὲ σπαταλῶσα ζῶσα τέθνηκεν.

6but  i she who is self-indulgent is  j dead even while she lives.

7καὶ ταῦτα παράγγελλε, ἵνα ἀνεπίλημπτοι ὦσιν.

7 k Command these things as well, so that they may be without reproach.

8εἰ δέ τις τῶν ἰδίων καὶ μάλιστα οἰκείων οὐ προνοεῖ, τὴν πίστιν ἤρνηται καὶ ἔστιν ἀπίστου χείρων.

8But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for  l members of his household, he has  m denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

9Χήρα καταλεγέσθω μὴ ἔλαττον ἐτῶν ἑξήκοντα γεγονυῖα, ἑνὸς ἀνδρὸς γυνή,

9Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been  n the wife of one husband, [1]

10ἐν ἔργοις καλοῖς μαρτυρουμένη, εἰ ἐτεκνοτρόφησεν, εἰ ἐξενοδόχησεν, εἰ ἁγίων πόδας ἔνιψεν, εἰ θλιβομένοις ἐπήρκεσεν, εἰ παντὶ ἔργῳ ἀγαθῷ ἐπηκολούθησεν.

10and having a reputation for good works: if she has brought up children, has  n shown hospitality,  o has washed the feet of the saints, has  p cared for the afflicted, and has  q devoted herself to every good work.

11νεωτέρας δὲ χήρας παραιτοῦ· ὅταν γὰρ καταστρηνιάσωσιν τοῦ Χριστοῦ, γαμεῖν θέλουσιν

11But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when  r their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry

12ἔχουσαι κρίμα ὅτι τὴν πρώτην πίστιν ἠθέτησαν·

12and so incur condemnation for having abandoned their former faith.

13ἅμα δὲ καὶ ἀργαὶ μανθάνουσιν περιερχόμεναι τὰς οἰκίας, οὐ μόνον δὲ ἀργαὶ ἀλλὰ καὶ φλύαροι καὶ περίεργοι, λαλοῦσαι τὰ μὴ δέοντα.

13Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also  s gossips and  t busybodies, saying what they should not.

14Βούλομαι οὖν νεωτέρας γαμεῖν, τεκνογονεῖν, οἰκοδεσποτεῖν, μηδεμίαν ἀφορμὴν διδόναι τῷ ἀντικειμένῳ λοιδορίας χάριν·

14So I would have  u younger widows marry, bear children,  v manage their households, and  w give the adversary no occasion for slander.

15ἤδη γάρ τινες ἐξετράπησαν ὀπίσω τοῦ σατανᾶ.

15 x For some have already strayed after Satan.

16εἴ τις πιστὴ ἔχει χήρας, ἐπαρκείτω αὐταῖς καὶ μὴ βαρείσθω ἡ ἐκκλησία, ἵνα ταῖς ὄντως χήραις ἐπαρκέσῃ.

16If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those  y who are truly widows.

17Οἱ καλῶς προεστῶτες πρεσβύτεροι διπλῆς τιμῆς ἀξιούσθωσαν, μάλιστα οἱ κοπιῶντες ἐν λόγῳ καὶ διδασκαλίᾳ.

17Let the elders  z who rule well be considered worthy of  a double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.

18λέγει γὰρ ἡ γραφή· βοῦν ἀλοῶντα οὐ φιμώσεις, καί· ἄξιος ὁ ἐργάτης τοῦ μισθοῦ αὐτοῦ.

18For the Scripture says,  b “You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain,” and,  c “The laborer deserves his wages.”

19κατὰ πρεσβυτέρου κατηγορίαν μὴ παραδέχου, ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ ἐπὶ δύο ἢ τριῶν μαρτύρων.

19Do not admit a charge against an elder except  d on the evidence of two or three witnesses.

20Τοὺς ἁμαρτάνοντας ἐνώπιον πάντων ἔλεγχε, ἵνα καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ φόβον ἔχωσιν.

20As for those who persist in sin,  e rebuke them in the presence of all,  f so that the rest may stand in fear.

21Διαμαρτύρομαι ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ τῶν ἐκλεκτῶν ἀγγέλων, ἵνα ταῦτα φυλάξῃς χωρὶς προκρίματος, μηδὲν ποιῶν κατὰ πρόσκλισιν.

21In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of the elect angels  g I charge you to keep these rules without prejudging,  h doing nothing from partiality.

22χεῖρας ταχέως μηδενὶ ἐπιτίθει μηδὲ κοινώνει ἁμαρτίαις ἀλλοτρίαις· σεαυτὸν ἁγνὸν τήρει.

22 i Do not be hasty in the  j laying on of hands, nor  k take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure.

23Μηκέτι ὑδροπότει, ἀλλ’ οἴνῳ ὀλίγῳ χρῶ διὰ τὸν στόμαχον καὶ τὰς πυκνάς σου ἀσθενείας.

23(No longer drink only water, but  l use a little wine  m for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.)

24Τινῶν ἀνθρώπων αἱ ἁμαρτίαι πρόδηλοί εἰσιν προάγουσαι εἰς κρίσιν, τισὶν δὲ καὶ ἐπακολουθοῦσιν·

24The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later.

25ὡσαύτως καὶ τὰ ἔργα τὰ καλὰ πρόδηλα, καὶ τὰ ἄλλως ἔχοντα κρυβῆναι οὐ δύνανται.

25So also good works are conspicuous, and  n even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

ΠΡΟΣ ΤΙΜΟΘΕΟΝ Αʹ 6 Ὅσοι εἰσὶν ὑπὸ ζυγὸν δοῦλοι, τοὺς ἰδίους δεσπότας πάσης τιμῆς ἀξίους ἡγείσθωσαν, ἵνα μὴ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἡ διδασκαλία βλασφημῆται.

1 TIMOTHY 6  o Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants [1] regard their own masters as worthy of all honor,  p so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled.

2οἱ δὲ πιστοὺς ἔχοντες δεσπότας μὴ καταφρονείτωσαν, ὅτι ἀδελφοί εἰσιν, ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον δουλευέτωσαν, ὅτι πιστοί εἰσιν καὶ ἀγαπητοὶ οἱ τῆς εὐεργεσίας ἀντιλαμβανόμενοι.

Ταῦτα δίδασκε καὶ παρακάλει.

2Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are  q brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved.

False Teachers and True Contentment

 r Teach and urge these things.

3εἴ τις ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖ καὶ μὴ προσέρχεται ὑγιαίνουσιν λόγοις τοῖς τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ τῇ κατ’ εὐσέβειαν διδασκαλίᾳ,

3If anyone  s teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with  t the sound [2] words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching  u that accords with godliness,

4τετύφωται, μηδὲν ἐπιστάμενος, ἀλλὰ νοσῶν περὶ ζητήσεις καὶ λογομαχίας, ἐξ ὧν γίνεται φθόνος ἔρις βλασφημίαι, ὑπόνοιαι πονηραί,

4 v he is puffed up with conceit and  w understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for  x controversy and for  y quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions,

5διαπαρατριβαὶ διεφθαρμένων ἀνθρώπων τὸν νοῦν καὶ ἀπεστερημένων τῆς ἀληθείας, νομιζόντων πορισμὸν εἶναι τὴν εὐσέβειαν.

5and constant friction among people  z who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth,  a imagining that godliness is a means of gain.

6Ἔστιν δὲ πορισμὸς μέγας ἡ εὐσέβεια μετὰ αὐταρκείας·

6But  b godliness  c with contentment is great gain,

7οὐδὲν γὰρ εἰσηνέγκαμεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον,

ὅτι οὐδὲ ἐξενεγκεῖν τι δυνάμεθα·

7for  d we brought nothing into the world, and [3] we cannot take anything out of the world.

8ἔχοντες δὲ διατροφὰς καὶ σκεπάσματα,

τούτοις ἀρκεσθησόμεθα.

8But  e if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.

9οἱ δὲ βουλόμενοι πλουτεῖν ἐμπίπτουσιν εἰς πειρασμὸν καὶ παγίδα καὶ ἐπιθυμίας πολλὰς ἀνοήτους καὶ βλαβεράς, αἵτινες βυθίζουσιν τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς ὄλεθρον καὶ ἀπώλειαν.

9But  f those who desire to be rich fall into temptation,  g into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that  h plunge people into ruin and destruction.

10ῥίζα γὰρ πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστιν ἡ φιλαργυρία, ἧς τινες ὀρεγόμενοι ἀπεπλανήθησαν ἀπὸ τῆς πίστεως καὶ ἑαυτοὺς περιέπειραν ὀδύναις πολλαῖς.

10For the love of money is a root of  i all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Fight the Good Fight of Faith

11Σὺ δέ, ὦ ἄνθρωπε θεοῦ, ταῦτα φεῦγε·

δίωκε δὲ δικαιοσύνην εὐσέβειαν πίστιν,

ἀγάπην ὑπομονὴν πραϋπαθίαν.

11But as for you,  j O man of God,  k flee these things.  l Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.

12ἀγωνίζου τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα τῆς πίστεως,

ἐπιλαβοῦ τῆς αἰωνίου ζωῆς, εἰς ἣν ἐκλήθης

καὶ ὡμολόγησας τὴν καλὴν ὁμολογίαν

ἐνώπιον πολλῶν μαρτύρων.

12 m Fight the good fight of the faith.  n Take hold of the eternal life  o to which you were called and about which you made  p the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

13παραγγέλλω [σοι] ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ζῳογονοῦντος τὰ πάντα καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ μαρτυρήσαντος ἐπὶ Ποντίου Πιλάτου τὴν καλὴν ὁμολογίαν,

13 q I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus,  r who in his testimony before [4] Pontius Pilate made  p the good confession,

14τηρῆσαί σε τὴν ἐντολὴν ἄσπιλον ἀνεπίλημπτον μέχρι τῆς ἐπιφανείας τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ,

14to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until  s the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15ἣν καιροῖς ἰδίοις δείξει

ὁ μακάριος καὶ μόνος δυνάστης,

ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλευόντων

καὶ κύριος τῶν κυριευόντων,

15which he will display  t at the proper time—he who is  u the blessed and only Sovereign,  v the King of kings and Lord of lords,

16ὁ μόνος ἔχων ἀθανασίαν,

φῶς οἰκῶν ἀπρόσιτον,

ὃν εἶδεν οὐδεὶς ἀνθρώπων οὐδὲ ἰδεῖν δύναται·

ᾧ τιμὴ καὶ κράτος αἰώνιον, ἀμήν.

16 w who alone has immortality,  x who dwells in  y unapproachable light,  z whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

17Τοῖς πλουσίοις ἐν τῷ νῦν αἰῶνι παράγγελλε μὴ ὑψηλοφρονεῖν μηδὲ ἠλπικέναι ἐπὶ πλούτου ἀδηλότητι ἀλλ’ ἐπὶ θεῷ τῷ παρέχοντι ἡμῖν πάντα πλουσίως εἰς ἀπόλαυσιν,

17As for the rich in  a this present age, charge them  b not to be haughty, nor  c to set their hopes on  d the uncertainty of riches, but on God,  e who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

18ἀγαθοεργεῖν, πλουτεῖν ἐν ἔργοις καλοῖς, εὐμεταδότους εἶναι, κοινωνικούς,

18They are to do good,  f to be rich in good works, to be generous and  g ready to share,

19ἀποθησαυρίζοντας ἑαυτοῖς θεμέλιον καλὸν εἰς τὸ μέλλον, ἵνα ἐπιλάβωνται τῆς ὄντως ζωῆς.

19thus  h storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may  i take hold of  j that which is truly life.

20Ὦ Τιμόθεε, τὴν παραθήκην φύλαξον ἐκτρεπόμενος τὰς βεβήλους κενοφωνίας καὶ ἀντιθέσεις τῆς ψευδωνύμου γνώσεως,

20O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you.  k Avoid the  l irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,”

21ἥν τινες ἐπαγγελλόμενοι περὶ τὴν πίστιν ἠστόχησαν.

Ἡ χάρις μεθ’ ὑμῶν.

21for by professing it some have swerved from the faith.

 m Grace be with you. [5]
