The Supremacy of God’s Son
ΠΡΟΣ ΕΒΡΑΙΟΥΣ 1 Πολυμερῶς καὶ πολυτρόπως πάλαι ὁ θεὸς λαλήσας τοῖς πατράσιν ἐν τοῖς προφήταις
HEBREWS 1 Long ago, at many times and a in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,
2ἐπ’ ἐσχάτου τῶν ἡμερῶν τούτων ἐλάλησεν ἡμῖν ἐν υἱῷ, ὃν ἔθηκεν κληρονόμον πάντων, δι’ οὗ καὶ ἐποίησεν τοὺς αἰῶνας·
2but b in these last days c he has spoken to us by d his Son, whom he appointed e the heir of all things, f through whom also he created g the world.
3ὃς ὢν ἀπαύγασμα τῆς δόξης καὶ χαρακτὴρ τῆς ὑποστάσεως αὐτοῦ,
φέρων τε τὰ πάντα τῷ ῥήματι τῆς δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ,
καθαρισμὸν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ποιησάμενος
ἐκάθισεν ἐν δεξιᾷ τῆς μεγαλωσύνης ἐν ὑψηλοῖς,
3He is the radiance of the glory of God and h the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. i After making purification for sins, j he sat down k at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
4τοσούτῳ κρείττων γενόμενος τῶν ἀγγέλων
ὅσῳ διαφορώτερον παρ’ αὐτοὺς κεκληρονόμηκεν ὄνομα.
4having become as much superior to angels as the name l he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
5Τίνι γὰρ εἶπέν ποτε τῶν ἀγγέλων·
υἱός μου εἶ σύ,
ἐγὼ σήμερον γεγέννηκά σε;
καὶ πάλιν·
ἐγὼ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ εἰς πατέρα,
καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι εἰς υἱόν;
5For to which of the angels did God ever say,
m “You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”?
Or again,
n “I will be to him a father,
and he shall be to me a son”?
6ὅταν δὲ πάλιν εἰσαγάγῃ τὸν πρωτότοκον εἰς τὴν οἰκουμένην, λέγει·
καὶ προσκυνησάτωσαν αὐτῷ πάντες ἄγγελοι θεοῦ.
6And again, when he brings o the firstborn into the world, he says,
p “Let all God’s angels worship him.”
7καὶ πρὸς μὲν τοὺς ἀγγέλους λέγει·
ὁ ποιῶν τοὺς ἀγγέλους αὐτοῦ πνεύματα
καὶ τοὺς λειτουργοὺς αὐτοῦ πυρὸς φλόγα,
7Of the angels he says,
q “He makes his angels winds,
and his ministers a flame of fire.”
8πρὸς δὲ τὸν υἱόν·
ὁ θρόνος σου ὁ θεὸς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ αἰῶνος,
καὶ ἡ ῥάβδος τῆς εὐθύτητος ῥάβδος τῆς βασιλείας σου.
8But of the Son he says,
r “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
9ἠγάπησας δικαιοσύνην καὶ ἐμίσησας ἀνομίαν·
διὰ τοῦτο ἔχρισέν σε ὁ θεὸς ὁ θεός σου
ἔλαιον ἀγαλλιάσεως παρὰ τοὺς μετόχους σου.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, s has anointed you
with t the oil of gladness beyond your companions.”
10καί·
σὺ κατ’ ἀρχάς, κύριε, τὴν γῆν ἐθεμελίωσας,
καὶ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν σού εἰσιν οἱ οὐρανοί·
10And,
u “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
and the heavens are the work of your hands;
11αὐτοὶ ἀπολοῦνται, σὺ δὲ διαμένεις,
καὶ πάντες ὡς ἱμάτιον παλαιωθήσονται,
11 they will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment,
12καὶ ὡσεὶ περιβόλαιον ἑλίξεις αὐτούς,
ὡς ἱμάτιον καὶ ἀλλαγήσονται·
σὺ δὲ ὁ αὐτὸς εἶ καὶ τὰ ἔτη σου οὐκ ἐκλείψουσιν.
12 like a robe you will roll them up,
like a garment they will be changed. [1]
But you are v the same,
and your years will have no end.”
13πρὸς τίνα δὲ τῶν ἀγγέλων εἴρηκέν ποτε·
κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου,
ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου;
13And to which of the angels has he ever said,
w “Sit at my right hand
x until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”?
14οὐχὶ πάντες εἰσὶν λειτουργικὰ πνεύματα εἰς διακονίαν ἀποστελλόμενα διὰ τοὺς μέλλοντας κληρονομεῖν σωτηρίαν;
14Are they not all ministering spirits y sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to z inherit salvation?
Warning Against Neglecting Salvation
ΠΡΟΣ ΕΒΡΑΙΟΥΣ 2 Διὰ τοῦτο δεῖ περισσοτέρως προσέχειν ἡμᾶς τοῖς ἀκουσθεῖσιν, μήποτε παραρυῶμεν.
HEBREWS 2 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.
2εἰ γὰρ ὁ δι’ ἀγγέλων λαληθεὶς λόγος ἐγένετο βέβαιος καὶ πᾶσα παράβασις καὶ παρακοὴ ἔλαβεν ἔνδικον μισθαποδοσίαν,
2For since a the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and b every transgression or disobedience received a just c retribution,
3πῶς ἡμεῖς ἐκφευξόμεθα τηλικαύτης ἀμελήσαντες σωτηρίας, ἥτις ἀρχὴν λαβοῦσα λαλεῖσθαι διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ὑπὸ τῶν ἀκουσάντων εἰς ἡμᾶς ἐβεβαιώθη,
3 d how shall we escape if we e neglect such a great salvation? It was f declared at first by the Lord, and it was g attested to us h by those who heard,
4συνεπιμαρτυροῦντος τοῦ θεοῦ σημείοις τε καὶ τέρασιν καὶ ποικίλαις δυνάμεσιν καὶ πνεύματος ἁγίου μερισμοῖς κατὰ τὴν αὐτοῦ θέλησιν;
4 g while God also bore witness i by signs and wonders and various miracles and by j gifts of the Holy Spirit k distributed according to his will.
The Founder of Salvation
5Οὐ γὰρ ἀγγέλοις ὑπέταξεν τὴν οἰκουμένην τὴν μέλλουσαν, περὶ ἧς λαλοῦμεν.
5For it was not to angels that God subjected the world l to come, of which we are speaking.
6διεμαρτύρατο δέ πού τις λέγων·
τί ἐστιν ἄνθρωπος ὅτι μιμνῄσκῃ αὐτοῦ,
ἢ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου ὅτι ἐπισκέπτῃ αὐτόν;
6It has been testified somewhere,
m “What is man, that you are mindful of him,
or the son of man, that you care for him?
7ἠλάττωσας αὐτὸν βραχύ τι παρ’ ἀγγέλους,
δόξῃ καὶ τιμῇ ἐστεφάνωσας αὐτόν,
7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned him with glory and honor, [1]
8πάντα ὑπέταξας ὑποκάτω τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ.
ἐν τῷ γὰρ ὑποτάξαι [αὐτῷ] τὰ πάντα οὐδὲν ἀφῆκεν αὐτῷ ἀνυπότακτον. Νῦν δὲ οὔπω ὁρῶμεν αὐτῷ τὰ πάντα ὑποτεταγμένα·
8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.”
Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, n we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.
9τὸν δὲ βραχύ τι παρ’ ἀγγέλους ἠλαττωμένον βλέπομεν Ἰησοῦν διὰ τὸ πάθημα τοῦ θανάτου δόξῃ καὶ τιμῇ ἐστεφανωμένον, ὅπως χάριτι θεοῦ ὑπὲρ παντὸς γεύσηται θανάτου.
9But we see him o who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, p crowned with glory and honor q because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might r taste death s for everyone.
10Ἔπρεπεν γὰρ αὐτῷ, δι’ ὃν τὰ πάντα καὶ δι’ οὗ τὰ πάντα, πολλοὺς υἱοὺς εἰς δόξαν ἀγαγόντα τὸν ἀρχηγὸν τῆς σωτηρίας αὐτῶν διὰ παθημάτων τελειῶσαι.
10For it t was fitting that he, u for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons v to glory, should make the w founder of their salvation x perfect through suffering.
11ὅ τε γὰρ ἁγιάζων καὶ οἱ ἁγιαζόμενοι ἐξ ἑνὸς πάντες· δι’ ἣν αἰτίαν οὐκ ἐπαισχύνεται ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοὺς καλεῖν
11For y he who sanctifies and z those who are sanctified a all have one source. [2] That is why he is not ashamed to call them b brothers, [3]
12λέγων·
ἀπαγγελῶ τὸ ὄνομά σου τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς μου,
ἐν μέσῳ ἐκκλησίας ὑμνήσω σε,
12saying,
c “I will tell of your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the d congregation I will sing your praise.”
13καὶ πάλιν·
ἐγὼ ἔσομαι πεποιθὼς ἐπ’ αὐτῷ,
καὶ πάλιν·
ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ καὶ τὰ παιδία ἅ μοι ἔδωκεν ὁ θεός.
13And again,
e “I will put my trust in him.”
And again,
f “Behold, I and the children g God has given me.”
14Ἐπεὶ οὖν τὰ παιδία κεκοινώνηκεν αἵματος καὶ σαρκός, καὶ αὐτὸς παραπλησίως μετέσχεν τῶν αὐτῶν, ἵνα διὰ τοῦ θανάτου καταργήσῃ τὸν τὸ κράτος ἔχοντα τοῦ θανάτου, τοῦτ’ ἔστιν τὸν διάβολον,
14Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise h partook of the same things, that i through death he might j destroy k the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
15καὶ ἀπαλλάξῃ τούτους, ὅσοι φόβῳ θανάτου διὰ παντὸς τοῦ ζῆν ἔνοχοι ἦσαν δουλείας.
15and deliver all those who l through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
16οὐ γὰρ δήπου ἀγγέλων ἐπιλαμβάνεται ἀλλὰ σπέρματος Ἀβραὰμ ἐπιλαμβάνεται.
16For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he m helps the offspring of Abraham.
17ὅθεν ὤφειλεν κατὰ πάντα τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς ὁμοιωθῆναι, ἵνα ἐλεήμων γένηται καὶ πιστὸς ἀρχιερεὺς τὰ πρὸς τὸν θεὸν εἰς τὸ ἱλάσκεσθαι τὰς ἁμαρτίας τοῦ λαοῦ.
17Therefore he had n to be made like his brothers in every respect, o so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest p in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
18ἐν ᾧ γὰρ πέπονθεν αὐτὸς πειρασθείς, δύναται τοῖς πειραζομένοις βοηθῆσαι.
18For because he himself has suffered q when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Jesus Greater Than Moses
ΠΡΟΣ ΕΒΡΑΙΟΥΣ 3 Ὅθεν, ἀδελφοὶ ἅγιοι, κλήσεως ἐπουρανίου μέτοχοι, κατανοήσατε τὸν ἀπόστολον καὶ ἀρχιερέα τῆς ὁμολογίας ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν,
HEBREWS 3 Therefore, holy brothers, [1] you who share in r a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, s the apostle and high priest of our confession,
2πιστὸν ὄντα τῷ ποιήσαντι αὐτὸν ὡς καὶ Μωϋσῆς ἐν [ὅλῳ] τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ.
2who was faithful to him who appointed him, t just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s [2] house.
3πλείονος γὰρ οὗτος δόξης παρὰ Μωϋσῆν ἠξίωται, καθ’ ὅσον πλείονα τιμὴν ἔχει τοῦ οἴκου ὁ κατασκευάσας αὐτόν·
3For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.
4πᾶς γὰρ οἶκος κατασκευάζεται ὑπό τινος, ὁ δὲ πάντα κατασκευάσας θεός.
4(For every house is built by someone, but u the builder of all things is God.)
5καὶ Μωϋσῆς μὲν πιστὸς ἐν ὅλῳ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ ὡς θεράπων εἰς μαρτύριον τῶν λαληθησομένων,
5 v Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house w as a servant, x to testify to the things that were to be spoken later,
6Χριστὸς δὲ ὡς υἱὸς ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ· οὗ οἶκός ἐσμεν ἡμεῖς, ἐάν[περ] τὴν παρρησίαν καὶ τὸ καύχημα τῆς ἐλπίδος κατάσχωμεν.
6but Christ is faithful over God’s house as y a son. And z we are his house if indeed we a hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. [3]
A Rest for the People of God
7Διό, καθὼς λέγει τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον·
σήμερον ἐὰν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ἀκούσητε,
7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
b “Today, if you hear his voice,
8μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ
κατὰ τὴν ἡμέραν τοῦ πειρασμοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ,
8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9οὗ ἐπείρασαν οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ἐν δοκιμασίᾳ
καὶ εἶδον τὰ ἔργα μου
9 where your fathers put me to the test
and saw my works for c forty years.
10τεσσεράκοντα ἔτη·
διὸ προσώχθισα τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ
καὶ εἶπον· ἀεὶ πλανῶνται τῇ καρδίᾳ,
αὐτοὶ δὲ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν τὰς ὁδούς μου,
10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
they have not known my ways.’
11ὡς ὤμοσα ἐν τῇ ὀργῇ μου·
εἰ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσίν μου.
11 d As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest.’”
12Βλέπετε, ἀδελφοί, μήποτε ἔσται ἔν τινι ὑμῶν καρδία πονηρὰ ἀπιστίας ἐν τῷ ἀποστῆναι ἀπὸ θεοῦ ζῶντος,
12Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from e the living God.
13ἀλλὰ παρακαλεῖτε ἑαυτοὺς καθ’ ἑκάστην ἡμέραν, ἄχρις οὗ τὸ σήμερον καλεῖται, ἵνα μὴ σκληρυνθῇ τις ἐξ ὑμῶν ἀπάτῃ τῆς ἁμαρτίας –
13But f exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by g the deceitfulness of sin.
14μέτοχοι γὰρ τοῦ Χριστοῦ γεγόναμεν, ἐάνπερ τὴν ἀρχὴν τῆς ὑποστάσεως μέχρι τέλους βεβαίαν κατάσχωμεν –
14For we have come to share in Christ, h if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
15ἐν τῷ λέγεσθαι·
σήμερον ἐὰν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ ἀκούσητε,
μὴ σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐν τῷ παραπικρασμῷ.
15As it is said,
b “Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
16τίνες γὰρ ἀκούσαντες παρεπίκραναν; ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντες οἱ ἐξελθόντες ἐξ Αἰγύπτου διὰ Μωϋσέως;
16For i who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not j all those who left Egypt led by Moses?
17τίσιν δὲ προσώχθισεν τεσσεράκοντα ἔτη; οὐχὶ τοῖς ἁμαρτήσασιν, ὧν τὰ κῶλα ἔπεσεν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ;
17And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, k whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
18τίσιν δὲ ὤμοσεν μὴ εἰσελεύσεσθαι εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσιν αὐτοῦ εἰ μὴ τοῖς ἀπειθήσασιν;
18And to whom did he swear that l they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?
19καὶ βλέπομεν ὅτι οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν εἰσελθεῖν δι’ ἀπιστίαν.
19So we see that m they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
