Epilogue
As Europe entered the second half of the 20th century, many of its nations decided to work toward a stronger unity throughout the continent. In the years immediately following the end of WWII, Europe’s political minds worked together to start the coalition that would become the European Union. Six countries founded the group: Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, West Germany, and Italy. With Germany reunification, the push for EU membership became a priority for much of Europe, including former Soviet countries. As of 2019, the European Union has 28 member states, though the United Kingdom is currently undergoing an exit negotiation. [236]
Warfare has by no means ceased in Europe after the horrors of both World Wars or the multitude of civil wars that followed, though it has not nearly matched the devastation of those conflicts. Modern Europe is a land of rich cultural history and technological advancement that exists side by side. The diverse communities of the continent have never forgotten the stories of their ancestors, nor have they ignored the lessons of their violent past. As Europe continues to move forward in the 21st century, it remains a beacon of knowledge and humility to the rest of the world.
