Module 63 Studying Genetic and Environmental Influences on Intelligence

Intelligence runs in families. But why? Are our intellectual abilities mostly inherited? Or are they molded by our environment? Few issues arouse so much passion. If we mainly inherit our intelligence, then people’s socioeconomic standing will correspond to their inborn differences. But if intelligence is mainly nurtured by our environments, then children from disadvantaged backgrounds can expect to lead disadvantaged lives—but with some hope that changing the environment could produce more intelligent and accomplished adults. Let’s examine some of the evidence.
