You might think that even the most controlling among us would realize the one thing absolutely out of their control would be the end of the world. But even that doesn’t stop some folks from trying.
A recent article by the Associated Press reveals that Texas investors are building a $300 million luxury bunker community for just such a doomsday scenario.5 It’s the perfect place for those worried about a dirty bomb or other catastrophic event.
Overlooking the new development will stand a fifty-foot statue of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, gripping his trident some fifty feet atop one of the largest fountains in the world.
To keep residents immune from any unpleasant ramifications from our world imploding, the community plans an eighteen-hole golf course, luxury shops, an equestrian center, polo fields, a twenty-acre lake with man-made white sand beaches, a high-end spa, and zip lines. But that’s only for the high-paying residents. The rest of us will find ourselves on the outside of the twelve-foot walls and security watchtowers surrounding the community.
The one thing residents might miss is the morning sunrise, since ninety percent of their living space will be underground behind secure air-lock blast doors.
The high-end, end-times community may be to die for . . . but the goal is that you never will die in it. Should someone “expire” while there, the community is creating DNA vaults for “family sustainability.” Which means should Uncle Gus not wake up one day, he can simply be “replicated”—hopefully before morning tee time.
Humans will go to any extreme to control their destiny. And yet God makes clear that only he controls the future. “We plan the way we want to live, but only God makes us able to live it” (Proverbs 16:9 MSG).
“WE PLAN THE WAY WE WANT TO LIVE, BUT ONLY GOD MAKES US ABLE TO LIVE IT” (PROVERBS 16:9 MSG).
If we can trust God with the next twenty-four hours, we’ll tend to worry less about our final twenty-four hours. God offers us something far better than an escape from the future. He offers himself.
