Helen Waddle’s most memorable party was the one she threw at her Shreveport, Louisiana, home for her and husband Paul’s fiftieth wedding anniversary. “I wanted to share the event with friends and family, and I knew I wanted some sort of program,” she says. “So I invited a local woman to play piano for us after dinner. I kept it a surprise from Paul, and it was such a delight when the pianist came out to play popular songs from the 1940s, as well as some classical pieces. It made the event unforgettable.” Take a cue from Waddle and bring in musicians to play tunes that suit your party’s theme, whether a chamber group, swing dance, or bluegrass band.
