JACKPOTS: A highly popular form of Draw Poker, requiring jacks or better to open the betting. See this page.
JACKS BACK or JACKSON: Poker. See this page.
JACKS HIGH: Poker. See this page.
JAMBONE and JAMBOREE: Special rulings optionally applied to the game of Railroad Euchre, described under Euchre, this page.
JASS: A game similar to two-handed Pinochle, this page, but with a single pack of thirty-six cards, ranking as in Klaberjass, this page; Trump: J, 9, A, 10, K, Q, 8, 7, 6 (dix). Other suits: A, 10, K, Q, J, 8, 7, 6. Jack of trump is “Jass”; 9, “Nell.”
Each player is dealt nine cards; the next, turned up and laid aside as trump, may be exchanged by player holding the dix, but with no score involved. Opponent leads to the first trick, but dealer does not have to follow suit or trump. High card of suit led wins unless trumped; and winner of trick draws the top card of the pack; loser draws the next. When all have been drawn, the hands are played out; but now a player must follow suit or trump the trick if out of suit if he can. If trump is led, he must play a higher trump if he has one. However, such rules do not apply to the Jass. A player may hold it (the jack of trump) as long as he wants.
Points are scored for the following cards taken during play: Jass, 20; Nell, 14; aces, 11 each; tens, 10; kings, 4; queens, 3; ordinary jacks, 2; last trick, 10. A player winning a trick and making his draw may meld one of the following scoring combinations: four jacks, 200; four aces, tens, kings, or queens, 100; five cards of a suit in sequence, 100; four in sequence, 50; three in sequence, 20; king and queen of trump, 20. The deal alternates and game is 1000, with a player “calling out” when he reaches it.
In three-handed Jass, each is dealt nine cards, and the next is turned up as trump. Dealer may exchange his hand for the nine left in the pack; otherwise, succeeding players have that privilege. All melds are made before play begins at dealer’s left, and a trick must be taken for a player’s meld to count. Four can play, each on his own, the dealer showing his final card as trump.
JIG: A variation of Earl of Coventry, this page, or Snip Snap Snorem, this page, with this difference: When a card is led (as 3), instead of adding others of that value (as 3 or 3), players must add the next higher value of the same suit (as 4, 5, 6). But when four such cards have been played, the sequence ends; and a new one must be started.
Note: A sequence beginning with Q, K, A can be continued into 2.
JOKER EUCHRE: See this page.
JOKER HEARTS: Regular Hearts, this page, but with a joker added to the pack, ranking below J and above 10, but also representing the highest card in any other suit, and counting 5 points against a player’s score if he takes it during play. To unload it, he must play it on a trick headed by a higher heart, as A, K, Q, J.
JOKER POKER: Any form of Poker with a joker added to the pack as a wild card. See this page.
JOKER RUMMY: Any form of Rummy utilizing a joker. See this page.
