What a lunch! On the way driving home, Nell felt as giddy as a schoolgirl asked to the prom. If Benita knew her father as well as she said she did, Sam just may like her.
Before she got carried away, Nell focused on her more immediate problem. Polly Schmidt needed to be considered a suspect. She probably had warm feelings for Sam even if they turned out not to be romantic feelings. If Sam had helped her financially through the years she might want to stand up for him and protect him. Nell was interested in finding out more about her. She hoped Sam wouldn’t be touchy about talking truthfully concerning Polly’s situation.
Benita’s friends were probably harmless. They were too young to know anything about nattering nabobs of negativism. She was anxious to see if Benita called her tomorrow with any new information on the night with her friends.
When Nell was getting out of her car, she realized she had left her doggie bag at Riverfront. For crying out loud! She was so interested in what Benita was telling her that she walked right out of the resturaunt. Then she fairly floated down the highway as she thought of Sam. She knew something was going on when she forgot about food. This must be serious. So much for her nice salmon sandwich for supper.
George and Newman were excited and jumped up and down when Nell came through the door. She should go outside and throw the ball around for them. Exert some energy.
Walking outside, she noticed that the patio furniture looked different. One of the chairs was pointed in a different direction than she usually had it arranged. She looked closely at the rest of the set. Everything else looked fine. Was she just imagining that the chair had been changed? Could the turkeys have pushed the chair around? Could a bear have come out of the woods and up to her patio? And the most heinous thought—had Northwoodsman been here?
She played ball with the boys, but the whole time she was nervously looking around her backyard and the neighbors’ yards, too. That chair had to be her imagination.
She let the dogs back in and put it in the back of her mind. She had to start writing the review of Riverfront.
Nell’s Noshes Up North
Riverfront - Peshtigo, WI
Riverfront is a beautiful old dining establishment that has decorated the village of Peshtigo for a couple of decades. Happily there is nothing old or stale about Riverfront, in regard to either the atmosphere or the food. The building is old, but lovingly maintained. True to its name, it is located on the curve of the Peshtigo River with plenty of window seating gracing the dining room.
Although it could be considered a supper club, the old notion of being open only at night no longer applies as the Front has started serving weekday lunches. It looks to be a good move as the place was quite busy recently for an early noon meal. The Wisconsin beer cheese soup melted in my mouth and the smooth texture slid gracefully down my throat. A subtle beer flavor came through as did a hint of garlic without being overwhelming. The combination of regular and white cheddar cheese blended perfectly. I could taste the spice of hot sauce and cayenne and the bite of Dijon mustard. The sautéed mix of carrots, onion, and celery added just the right touch and relieved a little of the guilt that comes from the beer, cheese, and bacon. Yes, little chunks of caramelized bacon were sprinkled on the top of the soup. I have ordered this soup here before and I will again. Outstanding!
In addition to the soup, I was pleased with the sandwich I ordered. It was grilled salmon on crispy toasted whole wheat bread. The salmon had a strong flavor without tasting fishy and it was grilled to perfection. The lemon dill aioli served on the side was also delightful. My companion was well satisfied with her bacon turkey club sandwich. It looked wonderful with three slices of toast filled with hickory smoked bacon, deli turkey, fresh greens, and tomato with a spicy mayo on the side. A large portion of kettle chips rounded out her plate.
An enjoyable lunch!
A true nosh or truly nauseous? —You Decide!
Nell checked over her review and then published it. The followers that have been waiting for her to add to her blog should be relieved. Nell was back at it. Anyone who dined at Riverfront could be assured of a fantastic meal. Northwoodsman would probably be able to find fault with something, though. If not with the place, then most certainly with her.
