The art of body modification, and tattooing in particular, comes with a long heritage. We know from a combination of preserved skin, ancient art and the discovery of ancient tattooing tools, that tattoos have been with us since the Upper Paleolithic period (50,000–10,000 years ago). The first direct evidence of tattooing that we have is the mummified skin of Ötzi the Iceman, from about 3200 BC. Other tattooed mummies have also been found around the world, for instance in Greenland, Mongolia, the Philippines and the Andes. One well-known example is the tattooed mummy of Amunet, Priestess of the Goddess Hathor, from ancient Egypt (c. 2134–1991 BC).
