Its passengers had three weeks supply of food, but enough water for only one week. Amongst the forty odd people in the lifeboat were Father Rory O’Sullivan (a Roman Catholic priest who had volunteered to be an escort for the evacuee children) and six evacuee boys from the CORB program. They spent eight days afloat in the Atlantic before being sighted and rescued.

36. The association was formerly known as the Evacuee Reunion Association. The association publishes books about the evacuation, organises reunion meetings and publishes a monthly newsletter, entitled The Evacuee, which is sent free to members, not all of whom are evacuees. The ‘Lost Touch’ section has helped many people to trace old friends. The association is currently raising funds to place a memorial in the National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield. It will pay tribute, not just to the evacuees, but to everyone involved in the evacuation – including foster parents, teachers, volunteers, nurses, train drivers and billeting officers.
