This English translation of Fukuzawa Yukichi’s Gakumon no susume (An Encouragement of Learning) has been revised and reset from the first edition published by Monumenta Nipponica and Sophia University Press in 1969. In this new edition, Fukuzawa’s original notes to the text are indicated with asterisks. Additional notes are indicated by daggers and given in square brackets. English words employed by Fukuzawa in the original Japanese text are shown by the use of bold face.
All Japanese names appearing in the text are written in the Japanese order, i.e. with family name followed by first name. All Japanese words are romanized according to the modified Hepburn system. Macrons have been included to indicate long syllables but have been eliminated from fully anglicized words, such as “Tokyo” or “Kyoto.” With the exception of Confucius (Kong Fuzi) and Mencius (Mengzi), all Chinese names are rendered according to the Pin-yin system. The original Chinese and Japanese versions of names are given in the index.
