* The asexual spores were once referred to as the ‘imperfect’ stage of the life cycle. The more modern terminology, however, is anamorph. Similarly, the sexual spores were once referred to as the ‘perfect’ stage of the life cycle, but the modern term is teleomorph. The terms anamorph and teleomorph will be used throughout the remainder of the book to refer to asexual and sexual stages of fungal life cycles, respectively. Anamorphs and teleomorphs are often given separate Latin names, especially where the teleomorph was not discovered until long after the anamorph had been described and named. For example, Aspergillus is the anamorph of the teleomorph Eurotium.
