Baking powder is used in many bread and baking recipes to provide an airy lift. Commercial brands, however, are high in phosphorus, even in small amounts. This quick, phosphorus-free version contains only two ingredients readily available at nearly any grocery store.
6 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons baking soda
Sift the cream of tartar and baking soda together into a small bowl. Transfer to an airtight jar and store in a cool location for up to one month.
Ingredient tip: Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, works as a leavening agent but also has many other uses around the house. It can be helpful in soothing sunburned skin, as a tooth whitener and cleaner, and in various cleaning applications around the house.
