* In Iran, the Prime Minister, Mohammed Mosadeq, wanted to nationalize the British owned oil fields. A mission in 1951 by the ever-available Averell Harriman to bring peace between the British and Iranians failed. In 1952, the Shah’s regime appeared in jeopardy, and Acheson wanted to advance the Iranian government $100 million against future delivery of oil under the Defense Materials Procurement Act. Lovell objected but Truman went ahead and ordered the oil credits. Mosadeq, however, rejected the U.S. offer, and Iran plunged into riots. The CIA stepped in to overthrow Mosadeq and restore the Shah in 1953.
