If you’re traveling along the northern coast of California, a stop at Redwood National Park is a must. Even if you just hop out at Klamath River Overlook to smell the salty air and drive to Lady Bird Johnson Grove to walk among 2,000 year old trees, it’s worth it. But, there are plenty of trails and activities to keep you entertained for an extended stay. Provided below is an itinerary for one spectacular day here. Campgrounds are the only overnight accommodations in the park. Nearby dining, grocery stores, lodging, festivals, and attractions are listed in the What’s Nearby section.
Day 1: Entering from the south via US-101, stop at Kuchel Visitor Center to see if you can get a permit to access Tall Trees Trailhead. Continue north past Orick and turn right onto Bald Hills Road. Head to Tall Tree Grove if you got a permit, otherwise hike Lady Bird Johnson Grove. Return to US-101 and drive to Newton B. Drury Scenic Pkwy. If you like to hike, stop at Prairie Creek Visitor Center for the 12-mile James Irvine/Miners Ridge Trails Loop (best in the park). Otherwise continue north, stopping at Ah-Pah Trail and Klamath River Overlook. Time permitting, stop at Jedediah Smith to hike Stout Memorial Grove.
