THE CAPITAL FROM ABOVE

Oslo is where you tour begins, but don’t forget to visit the Opera House or Holmenkollen ski jump before you leave. These two world-famous sites are more than enough reason to plan some time before setting out on your trip.

VALLEYS, TRADITIONS AND THE OPEN FJELL

After leaving Oslo, head west: turn off the E16 onto the Rv7 road near Hønefoss. You will come across fewer and fewer settlements and more and more woods, lakes and ranges of hills will come into view. Even before you reach the watershed in Hallingdal Valley, you will notice small wooden houses and farms, raging rivers and scattered villages that have developed out of former farmsteads. Now, the route takes you up to Europe’s most extensive plateau, the Hardangervidda, where you will have your first opportunity to try out those new hiking boots you brought with you.

WALLS OF ROCK, FRUIT & PLENTY OF CULTURE

The Norway of the fjords begins in the small town of Eidfjord. The roads wind past steep rock faces, the blue and green of the water of the inlets, majestic waterfalls and verdant meadows. The Hardanger region is the birthplace of national romanticism and the country’s main fruit growing area. Further on in Bergen, you will discover a pulsating cultural city that is also the heart of a diversified holiday region.

DEEP DOWN IN THE FJORDS

Sognefjord, Nordfjord and Storfjord – the North Sea flows deep into the interior of the country. Here, you will have no choice but to adjust your tempo to the topography – slow down and enjoy the unforgettable breaks: the ferry trip from Hellesylt (Road 60) into the Geirangerfjord, a stroll through the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund, a detour to the fishing village Bud and to the Atlantic Ocean Route (Road 664).

CATHEDRAL CITY IN THE HEART OF THE COUNTRY

The fjord district ends a little to the east of Kristiansund. The forests become thicker as you travel furher inland – until you catch sight of yet another fjord shortly before Trondheim. You will experience a fascinating mix of a wealth of history and a modern university town in this cathedral city.

UNBELIEVABLE COASTAL SCENERY

Your Hurtigruten adventure begins after your night in Trondheim. The ship glides tranquilly up the coast of the Helgeland district to the north, crosses the Arctic Circle, and drops anchor in Bodø sixteen hours later.

LOFOTEN WONDERLAND

Bodø is the gateway to the Lofoten. Do you still have some time? Then stay on board and travel on through dreamlike Trollfjord and only turn around in the harbour town of Stokmarknes. It is shortly after midnight and it is still as bright as day. In the afternoon, you set off to the south; into Trolllfjord again and then on to Bodø. Night has fallen, you meet the pub crawlers who just don’t want to go to bed in this town; there will be plenty of time to sleep on the train back to Trondheim.

SELDOM SEEN ANIMALS, TOWERING MOUNTAINS & SKI ARENAS

You drive to the south: over the pass in the Dovrefjell Mountains where Europe’s largest herd of musk oxen roams and close to the gigantic mountains in the Rondane national park – two boundless hiking areas with many mountain peaks over 2000 m (6600 ft) high. In the Gudbrandsalen Valley, the landscape widens towards the Olympic city of Lillehammer. Take some time to visit the winter-sport arenas and Maihaugen open-air museum – unadulterated Norway again!
