I CAN’T THINK of too many things that make me feel more accomplished and totally domesticated than making my own ice creams and custards. No matter what exotic sugars you toss into the mix, there’s just something so fantastically old-fashioned about deciding to take the time to churn or whisk up something yourself that could so easily be store-bought. It’s always so surprising how simple and crave-worthy these kinds of icebox desserts are—the ingredient lists are short, the hands-on time is marginal, and all you have to do is chain yourself to something heavy to keep from opening the fridge or freezer every 20 minutes to poke at them with a spoon as they chill.
